How do you spice up your "random" encounters?

I never use 'random' encounters, they are all planned.

What do you do with the bodies of your fallen enemies?

If a cleric animated it, could you use it to get an extra attack?

How many levels does D&D need?

People also forget things when they are inactive. We imposed an "experience point tax" that only effects epic level creatures. Any creature with 21 or more levels/HD loses their level percent of their experience per year, until they go below epic. This slows down advancement, and prevents...

    D&D 4E Re-examining 4e Wizard Class Features

My biggest complaint is the cost and time to cast rituals. In seeing that nobody was casting rituals, our group dropped the purchase and component cost to silver rather than gold. Like magic, everyone wanted to cast rituals! It made the game better. With the above rule, it would eliminate the...

    Cost and Time for Training?

That is very different from training that adds nothing to the campaign, but only serves as a tedious distraction. A good rule of thumb for any DM to follow, is what you are doing adding to the enjoyment of the players?

How many levels does D&D need?

I like the levels the way they are. I like a steady progression in abilities and spells. If there are only 6 or 10 levels, there isn't much progression, and it won't be gradual.

If WotC decided to revitalize and support AD&D, would you play/buy it?

Editions AD&D through 3.Pathfinder are a completely different game from 4.0. WotC had its chance to continue with 3.x, but abandoned it. As I see it Pathfinder owns one game, and WotC the other. I will play both.

    Twist My Adventure Idea

For a different twist... The miners found hallucinogenic shroom spores in the mine, and most are still down there enjoying the effects. Those that escaped are suffering from delusions. However the spores are slowly transforming the high miners into something else. Maybe the babbling incoherent...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

I start PCs out with better stats. NPCs start with all 10s, or an average of 10. Player characters start out with 18/16/14/12/10/08, which is an average of 13. All humanoids regardless of race become first level in something once they reach the age of maturity. Second, most NPCs are content to...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

If all the races developed at the same time, that eliminates on threat. Perhaps all the dragons were smaller an posed a lesser threat. Perhaps there were none where these civilizations developed. I would imagine that first there were citadels and walled cities that got larger and larger over...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

Send me a PM, and I'll email you the into I sent out with my most recent game. It's too long to post here at once. I assume that most civilizations are ancient, and they eventually grew to become powerful just as their enemies grew to become powerful. Sorry, but I don't go chapter and verse...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

Most non-adventuring high-level characters get powerful as part of a society, having taken a position of leadership. These powerful humanoids (if not evil) will likely want to remain part of that society. Most castles will not have these powerful beings, just the most significant ones. Most...

    Shapechange and templates

Using a template would not recreate a unique creature by any stretch of the imagination. Polymorph is a much lower level spell, adding a template is clearly beyond the scope of the spell. But not that of Shapechange.

    Shapechange and templates

I haven't seen any rules on this, so my group has been using the following 'house interpretation'. When a high-level arcane caster casts Shapechange, they can assume whatever shape they wish at the stated HD limit. The HD or LA of the new shape have no effect on the caster's level or HD...

    What Makes a Deity?

There was just a thread about DMs that "railroad" their players. I was recently in a game where the DM would constantly do that. We would want to stop and explore an interesting area, or do something other than jump right into the next epic battle. We would want to do things like role play, or...

    Min/Max your Min/Max'ing

I start everyone off with stats of 18-16-14-12-10-08. That is equal to a 22 point buy-in with the two highest stats increased by two. Players can then distribute them as they wish, which accomplishes about the same thing you do.

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

It would probably be less expensive to hire some henchcritters and an army, then take the castle you want. When the attackers have a higher level than the defenders. 15th level attackers would blow away 11th level defenders, but would be wiped out by defenders with Shapechange and Foresight...
