    Detect Evil/Good... Metagaming?

To discover an alignment, the easiest way is to observe a fellow character over time. Then there is the shortcut of Detect Thoughts, Know Alignment, or questioning under Detect Lie. Besides, alignment is too subjective. A person that the majority in society deems to be evil, could be good in...

    Detect Evil/Good... Metagaming?

Good and Evil can be an alignment, or it can be a nature. As an alignment, it is subjective and not constant. Detect Evil will detect a demon, devil or cleric with an evil aura. But it will not detect an orc fighter with a usually nasty disposition.

    Dual-GMing

More than two for the same extended campaign. There would be some territorial overlap, and the same characters were used. But each session would only be one DM.

Albany Gameday XIII - April 3rd

Thanks. Most of my family are out of the area, so we will be traveling. I missed the past two because either I was traveling or the games filled up too quickly. There's always next year...

The Play By Post FAQ: Last Updated 11/16/03

I am interested in hosting a game here. I've done so before in another forum (now defunct), but not at this site. I already have about six players, all non-EN-World members who would join. I would also open the game up to some other participants. In the past I had some side threads next to the...

    Dual-GMing

I don't know a thing about Shadowrun, but my group had a multi-DM arrangement for years. Basically each DM had a corner of the world where they would develop adventures around. The same location was rarely used, but that required an agreement between the DMs. This allowed us to use the same...

Albany Gameday XIII - April 3rd

Pretty much that eliminates gamers with families. The Easter weekend occurs during the onset of Spring, when the weather is finally getting acceptably nice in the greater Albany area. It's also a long weekend for many people who work and have children in school. I am not a Christian, so I do...

    Cost and Time for Training?

I am a big fan of the "DING!" your next level. Why, because it eliminates time spent that neither I the DM nor my players like. Likewise, I have no desire to role play a tax audit or a root canal.

Has the DMs job evolved in regard to "winging-it"?

OK, that makes sense. I started with AD&D in 1980, so I became accustomed to using house rules. Multi-classing and prestige classes made things like skills points, save progressions and hit points time consuming to figure, and all that figuring added nothing to the game. We made the following...

Has the DMs job evolved in regard to "winging-it"?

That's why I didn't like it, I had usually rolled poorly on once per encounter effects. Table 8-9 (PHB p159) was turned into an (X+d20)/3 formula, where X=3*level+charisma bonus-10. A 7th level cleric with a charisma of 16 and no relevant feats would translate into (14+d20)/3. If d20=10, the...

    Mage: Ascension vs Awakening

We had an incredible old mage game going, getting to an arete of 6 and all seven players reaching one sphere at five and another four. The epic highlight of the game was when we had our three character groups (mage, vampire & werewolf) descend on Mexico City at once.

Has the DMs job evolved in regard to "winging-it"?

I've seen them resolved in 3.x in half that time, and in ten times that time. They go very fast now, because they are reduced to a known (X+d20)/3 roll and calculation. I've played 4.0e, but never as a cleric. I've also never seen a party member cleric turn undead. From what I've read, a...

Do castles make sense in a world of dragons & spells?

Castles make perfect sense, in both low and high magic games. Definitely in low magic, because of their defensive capability. Now for the high magic justification: No ancient and powerful creature would attack the castle of a known high level character for fear of its own survival. Sure it may...

Looking for ideas/techniques to help players take ownership of plot

Before the campaign started, I asked the players for some of their old character sheets from their high-powered older and beloved characters. I then incorporated them into the campaign as heroes and villains.

Has the DMs job evolved in regard to "winging-it"?

The variety of many feats and many powers is what makes the game interesting. Myself and most of those I game with prefer to be able to customize our characters fro an upcoming encounter or situation. Which reminds me of one time as a DM.... I allowed a group of six 8th level characters max...
