So that's why you like it

I see the gaming experience 100% differently. Most players that I've seen role play well, created a character and put alot of imagination and forethought into it, and had generated some attachment (familiarity) to it.

    What's the draw of half-orcs?

I played a Half Orc Barbarian from first to the teens in levels (3.5E). He wasn't the sharpest marble in the bag, but his wisdom gave him insight into combat strategy. And he always had a different (often diametrically opposed) perspective to the situation than the Humans, Elves, Dwarves, or...

Is D&D About Having Power Without Responsibility?

Perhaps as ruler, I want to fail while bleeding the country dry of its resources? It's not like I need a career, or I really care about the little insignificant people who love there. I'm in it for the gold and treasure.

Is D&D About Having Power Without Responsibility?

All throughout history, and even today, this is a model that we've all seen from up close.

Is D&D About Having Power Without Responsibility?

It sure as heck is, D&D is an escape from the mundane word of school and/or work. I get to accumulate lots of gold by killing people and creatures I don't like, and spending it to make me more powerful so I can kill and loot more effectively in the future. Lots of power, very little...

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

Heh... my wife said that female characters should get an extra standard action, because they multi-task better. I think that games that included female players have had richer role playing.

The Proper Use of Nudity in FRPG Art

I second this. I picture most astral/elemental creatures as being androgynous, with gender only mattering to creatures that are designed to seduce mortals.

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

I agree, diversity is great. It has been my experience (it may not be representative of the majority) that I higher percentage of female players get into a game as a result of a partner than males. Last night I went to hear an ex-Buddhist monk speak about a book he had written. He shared a...

    4e Hits Half Price Books

I'm happy when I see books and CDs I want at half off regular price. And I would also happily buy used PDFs at half price too.

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

From what I recall, the DM rolled very few dice in the above mentioned encounter. 7d6 for fireball twice, and a few arrow attacks. But he did laugh alot, watching our confusion while we got caught with our pants down.

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

... eventually found the spot they arrived at. Yes, the tracking skill, with favorable terrain (mud from recent rain). And I believe the Heroism spell grants buffs to skill checks. Hmmm araneas... the party was distracted from noticing the ambush because there was a dead aranea floating...

    My First 4e TPK!

I was recently talking to another player about a TPK, and the survivability of wizards. Here is a 4.0E story about how my wizard survived the last encounter, before the DM called it quits. He admitted to wanting to kill off the party. We were third level, about to hit fourth. Our plan was for...

    Shields and Wands

I've had a string of rolls with that spell where the rest of the party would not have called it "attacking".

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

Here is an example of an encounter from three years ago... Our party of six characters (7th level) was ambushed by three humanoid cultists (same level) while trying to cross a river on a wooden ferry. In the surprise round (they had silent illusion up) their wizard hit three of us on the far...

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

I can't speak for other campaigns that I was not involved in, I can speak for those I was. Weather we were fighting drow, githyanki, demons, devils, evil cults, dragons, etc, there was always magic involved. Sometimes the spells were cast from memory, sometimes scrolls, potions and items were...

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

I wrote: "They can cast illusions, use invisibility or dimension door, or swoop out of a rope trick too." The spells I mentioned were levels 1, 2, 4 & 2. Not really "high level". I guess you are probably correct if you only look at modules, but I made no mention of modules. You stated...

Forked Thread: Noone buffs, Dispel magic scrolls suck

Unless the monsters or bad buys have the same level of magic to use against the characters. They can cast illusions, use invisibility or dimension door, or swoop out of a rope trick too.
