How would you do children as characters?

For abilities, I kinda like that a character's age is the cap on his ability scores. So a 14 year old may have rolled a 17 Int, but it's 14 for now. At 15 years old, his Int rises to 15, and so on until he's 17 years old and his Int reaches its full potential. I wish I had more help to give...

    Staff Combat

My houserule: Staff When used as a martial weapon, it can be used to make trip attacks. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you may drop the staff to avoid being tripped. If used as a martial weapon, you can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of...

    Looking for chase rules

Here's my houserules on it. It works similar to the 'active defense' optional rule, where instead of using the creature's armor class, they roll a d20 and add part of their AC. But this, of course, uses Speed, not AC. Escape and Pursuit A character make a Run check as a full round action. A...

    Magical Staffs

I'm not sure, but I think candidus_cogitens is talking about how in adventure the characters will find a staff or wand or whatever with only a few charges left. If that's what candidus_cogitens is talking about, then that's because the item isn't fresh out of the wizard's lab. It's been used a...

Rangers: the use of animal companions in-game?

IMC, we assume that most animals find it extremely boring and confining to sit on the ranger's shoulder or walk by his side all the time, so the animal roams, and any ranger worth his title is going to respect that. When the animal detects something it considers dangerous (anything except prey...

Comedy and Humor in RPG Books

I still laugh when someone talks about an unidentified wand being a +3 backscratcher or a fighter jumping into the arms of a wizard at the sight of a rust monster. :) As long as the humor is kept to sidebars/comics or is a part of flavor text that's relevant, it's a good thing.

Rangers: the use of animal companions in-game?

My players and I prefer a more mundane campaign, and often pick things like hounds, (for tracking) eagles, or hawks (for scouting). We also tend to prefer lower-level games, generally stopping before 10th level, so the problem with scaling isn't much of an issue for us.

So how do you pronounce 'dweomer'?

My 1E DM always pronounced it dwa-mer (rhymes with "bomber"). Not that I'm saying that's the correct pronounciation, but it worked for us! :D

    Walking with Dragons (Update 1/28/2004)

Er, I believe I was mistaken. Using Google, the books I could find by her with "dragons" in the title are Talking with, Searching for, and Dealing with... no Walking with. Well, I did say it was about a decade ago. Sorry for the confusion :o BTW, the books, as well as her others that I've...

    Walking with Dragons (Update 1/28/2004)

I just wanted to toss out that there's a published book called Walking with Dragons by... Patricia something. Probably about a decade ago, I read the book along with her others in the series with similar names (Talking with Dragons, Searching for Dragons, and others). I figured you might care to...

    What's so great about Shuriken?

I'm picturing a 3" blade (for Medium creatures), and, while I have no idea from experience or texts, I think I'd do more than flinch if one got stuck in me. Like whimper, cuss, and bleed :D Nice name, BTW  Thanks for all the replies folks, but keep in mind that I am renaming them...

    What's so great about Shuriken?

You could throw three shuriken with one attack roll in 3.0, but not 3.5. I briefly considered going back to that, but I don't like it because of the whole book of rules it entails, and the idea is too Hollywood-ninja-mammal for my tastes.

    What's so great about Shuriken?

I've heavily modified monks IMC, and there's no such things at special monk weapons anymore. As I was busy getting rid of those wacky monk weapons like sianghams, I went over shuriken with the intention of just renaming them "throwing knives". I read the description again, and got to thinking...

Enhancing the Charisma Stat: A fortune mechanic

I also DM with Charisma representing luck. The only solid rule I created is you get a number of luck rerolls (like the Luck domain) per day equal to your Charisma bonus. Characters with a Charisma penalty give me a number of rerolls per day on that character. To clarify, I can force that...

Sneak Attack in a WP/VP system

Ah, thank you all very much! While, I've got my own version of armor as DR and class-based defense, that sneak attack thing was the real bugger. Thanks again for everyone's help. I'm not sure how exactly I'm gonna work it, but I'm willing to bet that I'll use a combination of a few of the...

Sneak Attack in a WP/VP system

I know lots of games use VP/WP, and that lots of people use it as a house rule. I'm considering the idea of using it, but I've stumbled on how to adjucate sneak attacks. They seem like they should go straight to WP, but that's too powerful. I also thought of saying that you can't sneak attack...

    Who makes leather armor?

As a DM, I'm suffering from anally-thinking-of-details-that-don't-matter-syndrome, and i'm making a list of random professions for NPC's. Anyhow, it came up to me that I can't think of who makes leather armor. A tanner turns hide to leather, and an armorsmith makes armor out of metal... but now...

    New swift spells

Bladeturn? Please say you stole that idea from Rolemaster, cuz I did about 5 years ago. And I'll be thuroughly creeped out if you invented damn near the exact same spell that I did, free action and all! (everything except that only arcane casters get it)! Hmm, coincidence? Likely. Just thought...

How long have we all been playing RPGs?

Come now, am I really the "youngest" gamer here? I've been playing since summer of '94 (and what a fine summer it was...) and I consider nearly 10 years to be a good deal of time! Other younglings, come, stand with me! Face down these people that have gamed longer than we've lived! :D

    How would you handle this?

There are two ways I would resolve this. If a player said they were specifically watching for the guy with the stick to beat somebody with it, I'd have the characters watching and the staff guy roll init, but the staff guy would get a bonus. Otherwise, if they were just being wary, I would let...
