    Remember Kits?

Domains are the only saving grace of what they did to clerics in dumping specialty priests. IMC, all clerics are (or rather, were) specialty priests, no generic cleric allowed. Just like in the real world, the clergy of one God are very different from the clergy of a different God. While the...

    Remember Kits?

Ah, yes... from a DM's perspective, kits can be very handy. Back in 2nd ed, I had gone through all of the Complete _____ Handbooks and listed all of the kits that existed in my world. Very helpful for a new player to be able to slap a simple label on the character right from the start.

    Remember Kits?

Some of the old kits were good, but some were horrible. The good ones can be done with skill and feat selection (and possibly a slight tweak to the base class) and the bad ones are and will always be, broken. Overall, I think the game is better with PrC's and templates. The one thing that I...

The DM doesn't like it when we go Out of Character...

Well... first, a question. Do the newbies want help? If so, tell the DM to put a sock in it and give them the help they want... not more, not less. This includes rules and tactics. Now I know there's a lot of folks who've already posted saying that the players have to make their own...

    Piearcing *and/or* Slashing ??

I suspecrt that the answer has more to do with lazy authors not checking for consistancy tahn anything else. :)

RPGs "reduce accountability and substite raw power for legitimate authority"

Reality check: far too many of the folks in prison are not there for any sort of violent crime, nor even any sort of crime against society. Within the California Penal System, there is a mandate to educate the prisoners so that there is a better chance of them not returning. A friend of mine...

Attacks of Opportunity while holding a bow?

You can hold a bow and a melee weapon at the same time, but you need both hands to use the bow

    Craft or Profession?

Okay, nit picking time. In a general D&D type world, things like purified olive oil, vinegar, and the like would be available for purchase. Only someone living away from a city would make such things. Dried spices would be bought from the spice merchant. Herbs would be dried in the still...

    1st ed ranger conversion?

And, back then, monks had 2d4 hit points at first level.

I gave a little, and now they want...

Having a one hundred page gazeteer sounds interesting, I could not imagine actually getting any of the players in my current campaign to read more than 2 pages.

I gave a little, and now they want...

As the DM, it's your campaign. As the player, it's my character. The player has every right to expect to be able to play a character that will be fun for them to play. That doesn't mean that you need to let a Jedi into a Greyhawk game. I am not familiar with the Scarred Lands, and you...

Campaigns destroyed by catering to whims…

He was right, you should not have been mad. It was listed, you had the opportunity to know this in advance. On the other hand, the player should have told you about the specific changes the splat book made to the character. Was this The Complete Book of Paladins by any chance? Player...

Spoon feed or let them fend for themselves?

Well, I didn't mention it here, but they had a wagon and it was a road through a hilly area... easy to walk around, have to use the road for the wagon. Prior to this gaming session, I had sent out an e-mail asking the players what direction they wanted to go. Only one bothered to answer (and...

    Changing weapons in combat

So, even typing a one word responce and someone still gets in ahead of me. The fighter using UA attacks with sword attacks is indeed counted as fighting with two weapons. I actually find that a little strange, but that is the rule.

Spoon feed or let them fend for themselves?

I'm having this problem too. A while back, the party encountered a swarm of wasps, blocking the road. They dithered about aimlessly for over an hour of real time before coming up with any sort of plan. Most of the time was spent with "Well, there's nothing my character can do, so I'll just...

How do you handle forrested terrain in combat?

One of these days I intend to make tiles for my game. The guidelines in the DMG have already been mentioned, so I don't have to mention them. What I plan to do is make a bunch of tiles, some large 8 x 11, others small 8x4. By using something like cardstock, they can be double sided.

    1st ed ranger conversion?

Just wanted to give this one last bump. JRRNeiklot, unless I get hit with a major dose of ambition, I will likely use the one you sent me, and I thank you again for it. It's not exactly what I was looking for, but it will definately get the job done.

    Converting rolls from 2nd ed

Something else to take into consideration, back in 1st ed, I had a mage with an INT of 20, at 9th level. Most folks that learned of this character were amazed that he could have such a phenominally high stat! Except for a few rare and valuable magic items, there was no way to raise your stats...

Certain types of armor are never worn.

Actually, those books were an attempt at historical accuracy. In some cases, accuracy was passed for playability, but over all, they were not bad. (I have the Celt source book and A Mighty Fortress rennaisance source book.)
