One of these days I intend to make tiles for my game. The guidelines in the DMG have already been mentioned, so I don't have to mention them. What I plan to do is make a bunch of tiles, some large 8 x 11, others small 8x4. By using something like cardstock, they can be double sided.

Actually, those books were an attempt at historical accuracy. In some cases, accuracy was passed for playability, but over all, they were not bad. (I have the Celt source book and A Mighty Fortress rennaisance source book.)
