D&D 5E (2024) How to give complex martials to those who want them, without taking away the simple martials

True, but 3.x feats (at least "core" feats) suffered from both a lack of synergy and didn't really scale at all. Stuff like, for example, Tactical feats worked much better in that regard (yes, anyone could grab Shock Trooper and become good at charging. Most martials could also take Combat...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

I detest this new direction as well (but, I suspect, for entirely different reasons). To my recollection, encounter/per short rest abilities were first introduced to reduce the 15 minutes workday, which was generally loathed in 3e. Now, suddenly, we're back to per day abilities, except for...

Level Up (A5E) Maneuvers (4th and 5th Tier) - Winners and Losers

While, in general, I agree with your evaluation, I beg to differ about Sharpened Awareness. With PtA errata'ed, there's not a lot of ways in LU to gain advantage for a whole turn, at least for a martial; the only way I found, aside from Sharpened Awareness is Discerning Strike (unless I'm...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monk rules question

Sorry, I might be missing something, but why does he need to drop the sword at all? Assuming both the crossbow and the longsword are kensei weapons, couldn't he simply attack with an unarmed strike (proccing agile parry ), attack with either the longsword or the crossbow ( both are one handed...

D&D 3.x how much weaker are wizards(and other casters) in this edition compared to 3.5?

That's only true for spells that deal HP damage, tho. The way spell DC works in 5e, spells that depend on a save scale much better into the higher levels than they used to in 3.x, as DC is now 8 + casting stat bonus + proficiency across the board rather than "10+casting stat bonus+spell level"...

Pillars of Eternity Tabletop RPG coming from Obsidian Entertainment

The mechanics are, IMHO, really solid when it comes to combat, but the game isn't easily translated to PnP, since there's lots of moving parts and fiddly bits; for example, there aren't "rounds" proper in PoE: after an attack, you trigger a "recovery time", which is mainly dependent on armor...

    D&D 5E (2014) The fighter's Indomitable ability

...I'm overstating the issue that those "extra" ASI are budgeted and not free and fighters getting as many class abilities as as anyone else including their extra ASI means they actually get fewer unique class abilities? How so? You just proved as much. To clarify, I'm not saying that this is...

    D&D 5E (2014) The fighter's Indomitable ability

You know what else Fighters don't get? As many class abilities as every other noncaster. Really, I'll never understand why people keep bringing up the number of ASI a fighter gets like it's some sort of saving grace. They're not free by any stretch of imagination, they replace actual class...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak Saving Throws

Nope, I was addressing the (admittetdly less common) case where you're targeted by save-or suck effects each round and either save or sit out of action, each round. On the other hand, while I see your point, it's worth mentioning that, given that most fight only last 3-4 rounds in 5e, cutting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak Saving Throws

How so? If you succeed on a 16+, that's a 25% chance of succeeding. With advantage, that's 25%+ 18.75%= 43.75%, so you're only gaining 1.875 rounds of action out of 10 instead of 2.5. [Edit: because basic math, or basic english, for that matter, seem to be out of my league at 5:30 a.m.]

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak Saving Throws

You're still off base, tho. Saves work pretty much like AC, in that each successive point nets increasing returns to your survability, until the very last one which effectively doubles your effective health (assuming you're taking hit point damage). With saves ( especially save or suck that rob...

    D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster Maneuvers - only 3-4 good ones?

The problem with Parry and Rally is their scaling or lack thereof. At level 3, 1d8+0/+5 damage once/round can mean a lot. By the time you're level 11+, wasting both your reaction and a limited resource on what, 10 HP if you've maxxed out your dex score? isn't that hot, especially when rogues...

D&D 5E (2014) Are monks proficient in Unarmed Strikes?

To my knowledge, you don't get to add your proficiency bonus to damage rolls. To-hit rolls only.

D&D 5E (2014) The "more complex" fighter: What are you looking for?

They'd not be created just because, they'd be created because, obviously, there are people that miss them and would like to see 5e support them. A single one? Maybe not. But two, with the option of getting more later on would be an entirely different matter. First, I was fine with the...

D&D 5E (2014) The "more complex" fighter: What are you looking for?

Yet, more are being added ( SCAG, for example, offers 4 more ), and you can increase the number of cantrips you know through feats. Whether you might want to do so is irrelevant, the option is there for spellcasters but not martials ( whose selling point in most editions to date was, ironically...

D&D 5E (2014) The "more complex" fighter: What are you looking for?

Weird that this problem doesn't seem to come up when the spellcasters get like a gajillion cantrips on top of their spells and can still use just about every "generic" combat option.

D&D 5E (2014) The "more complex" fighter: What are you looking for?

For me? Tactical, effective at-will options. Basically, cantrips for fighters. As for why, tactical games generally revolve around making the best choice in a given situation and getting rewarded for it: right now, I don't feel that a class that's supposed to be all about combat gets enough...
