AD&D 1E 1E Fiend Folio monsters in 4E Monster Manual!

I don't have my 1E FF to hand but IIRC, that's the al-mi'raj, a creature from arabic and Near-Eastern folklore. I tend to cut monsters from mythology more slack than I do ones that were created for D&D or any other game. The folkloric creatures, after all, probably existed in people's...

AD&D 1E 1E Fiend Folio monsters in 4E Monster Manual!

IMO, for pure reading pleasure, ToH was the best 3.x book.

1 square Diagonal Movement: Reaction from Players

That's what I do too and it works a treat. A corollary of this is that an attacker with a 10' reach threatens 2 orthogonal squares away, or 1 orthogonal plus 1 diagonal, but not 2 diagonals. I may be quoting you out of context in which case, I apologise, but the 1.5 house rule is different from...

The Best & Worst of 3rd Edition: SINGLE BEST Product of 3rd edition (poll closed)

It was difficult deciding. For pure reading enjoyment, I would have gone for Tome of Horrors. But for utility + enjoyment, it was a toss-up between PHB II and the Spell Compendium. In the end, I went with the Spell Compendium as it's the non-core book I use most.

How old were you when you started playing D&D?

I had just turned 13. I started with Basic D&D which I borrowed from a friend who was also one of the gamers in my group. Eventually, at my behest, my mother bought me the 1E PHB, DMG and MM. She was concerned that I might give up the game after a short while and the purchase would go to...

    East Coast USA by Railway

Hello, Matt ;) A long time ago, I went between New York City and Baltimore, Maryland by train. I think the service was called the Metroliner. The ride was pleasant enough. The seats were very wide compared to our trains, and comfy too. But it wasn't particularly scenic. I've been to Boston...

    Surprisingly Deep Celebrities

Yup, and did his undergraduate studies at Princeton. Masi Oka, the actor who plays Hiro Nakamura in Heroes, has a BS in computer science and maths from Brown. When he's not acting, he works as a digital effects artist. His digital work appears in such films as SW I, II and III, Pirates of the...

Google Maps are getting a little TOO good...

It's stuffed underneath the sofa seat where the cushion meets the chair back on the left side as you face it. Hope that helps.

Sorry for the OT question... Hello, Mike ;) How late is "late"? I was only 26 when I completed mine.

    Surprisingly Deep Celebrities

I saw an interview with Morgan Freeman once that impressed me. I don't know if he's a genius per se, but he's certainly articulate and came across as very bright. Hugh Grant has an upper second class degree in English from Oxford (my alma mater!). There are a number of other British actors who...

Wait, that's how you say that?

If "alumin(i)um" has at least two pronunciations and "paladin" does as well, how many ways are there to say "pal(l)adium"? :heh:

Wait, that's how you say that?

One of my gaming buddies when I was an undergrad pronounced "scimitar" with a hard "c", i.e. "skimitar", which made the rest of us cringe. He also pronounced the "i" in "minotaur" like the "i" in "fin". It isn't wrong but does strike me as strange; for me, that "i" is like the one...

    D&D 4E STR 'to-hit' bonus departing in 4e?

I'm not one of the many: For several years I've been doing 15th century European swordsmanship (and other weapons) as a martial art. It isn't anachronistic in any way. It's drawn directly from treatises of the period and other historical sources. Essentially, that's correct. If two people of...

D&D 4E 4E Halflings unrecognizable from Tolkien hobbits

My understanding is that it was more like a negotiation than a threat of litigation (see here).

D&D 4E 4E Halflings unrecognizable from Tolkien hobbits

While it's true that Tolkien based his fantasy races on real world cultures (sometimes blending a couple), I think you've got the wrong one. Tolkien gave his dwarves old Scandinavian names so at least part of their inspiration came from Nordic culture. But when asked, Tolkien said: "I do think...

The Tielfling and The Gnome: On the Set of 4th edition

QFT I suspect that 4E will be a success because of its game mechanics. Lamentably, WotC will mistakenly also attribute this success to their (mis)treatment of fantasy. :\
