Let's Hear it for Wizard in Armor!

3.x had the means but they weren't worthwhile; the cost was greater than the benefit. If that's also the case in 4E, why bother with it at all? I disagree that those are examples of classic or iconic fantasy. But I don't want to get drawn on what classic/iconic fantasy is because that would...

Let's Hear it for Wizard in Armor!

I hope it's true that it would pretty much not be worth it for a wizard to wear armour in 4E. But if it's really that hard to obtain, why have it at all? I'm Simkin. I'm not worried about Eric of Manlyboloney. :) Besides, check out Imaro's post above. If they allow wizards to wear armour, then...

Let's Hear it for Wizard in Armor!

Allowing wizards to wear armour is quite possibly the worst 4E idea so far and the one most likely to kill D&D. There are two reasons for this: 1. D&D depends on iconic fantasy which itself draws on a shared aesthetic. The definition of "iconic fantasy" is being discussed in another thread so I...

    Just a couple of questions

Well, if you get one of each working together as a pair, you can call them 'lock 'n' 'lord. :D

    Just a couple of questions

Does that mean that if I'm a player (not a DM) in a game that the naming, look and game mechanics in that game will be as I want them? What about if I go to a convention and play in games there? And what about discussing D&D online in communities like EN World? I think you'll find that the...

Do you like the name "Rob Heinsoo"?

"Rob" is short for "Robot". Warforged are taking over, damn it!

What to do for D&D in Hobby Convention ?

I second everything said by LostSoul above. In addition, I would have fixed gaming times with a sign on the table saying when these will be, e.g. "Dungeons & Dragons demo games at 11.00am, 12.00 noon, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm." You could include some fluff at the top of the sign...

What's the first thing you guess you'll have to house-rule?

Bruce Cordell told me there would be. I don't think they'll be in PHB1, that's all. Perhaps PHB2. When they appear, they'll have an asian flavour.

What's the first thing you guess you'll have to house-rule?

Most likely Animate Object will still be a divine only spell. I'll houserule that it is both divine and arcane. As I've posted before in this forum, there are many well-known folkloric, literary and film references to arcane magic users being able to animate objects. I'll also change the...

You may find Roleplaying With Kids published by Technomancer Press useful. ;)

40 year old man wants to join my game

Thinking about the people I've gamed with over the years, I came up with this list: Sex: Male, Female Race: White, Black, (East) Asian, (Indian Subcontinental/South) Asian Nationality: US, UK, Canadian, Australian, South African, New Zealand, French, Belgian, German, Italian, Czech...

Lego to release dwarves, orcs and ogre

I don't say "Legos" but I do knowingly mispronounce "Lego". Like most native English speakers, I pronounce it lego but it's supposed to be laygo. My sister's boyfriend is Danish and used to work for the Lego Company. Not surprisingly, he pronounces it correctly.

Being safe as a woman jogger

Not around me. I know a lot of gamers. They're not normal. :p Seriously though, get a personal alarm. These are two-part devices which, when separated, emit an ear-piercing siren. You can attach the noise-making part to your belt and the 'key' to a cord looped around your wrist. Then jog as...

Lego to release dwarves, orcs and ogre

Update The set, No.7036, is now available through US-based online retailers. Check ebay.com for details. Close-up pics of the minifigs including the dwarves, orcs and troll/ogre can be seen at this site. It really does look like Lego has caught the LotR bug! Don't know about the...

    Question for the mods

This isn't really Meta, but I have a question that the mods are probably best able to answer. I hope you don't mind that I'm asking this here. My question is this: How can I contact the 4E designers? I would like to send them an e-mail drawing their attention to this thread but I don't know who...

    (Academic) Writing on RPGs

The RPG studies link in one of the posts above is a good starting point but the list there is by no means complete. There's a growing body of literature from the field of cultural studies that covers RPGs. This corpus of work has largely slipped under the radar of RPGamers themselves. A couple...

    Gygaxian Monsters

Hello, Gary ;) Can I please ask you about some other AD&D creatures? I'm particularly curious to know if gnomes in the game were inspired, at least in part, by the character called Hugi from Three Hearts and Three Lions. I know that Anderson calls him a "dwarf" at one point but it seems that...

Small but annoying things D&D never got right

I agree: Whenever I DM, I allow Intimidate to be attempted either with Strength (adjusted for size) or Charisma, whichever is higher. There was an optional rule like this in one of the 3.0 splatbooks. I hope they allow either in 4E.
