Did Anyone Else Try Out "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

That is interesting, it does appear that they have. I could have sworn WotC claimed they couldn't release theirs for 30 days. It seems odd that there would be different licenses for different participants. Even more odd that the 300 pound gorilla would have tighter restrictions.

Did Anyone Else Try Out "A Song of Ice and Fire?"

I believe all materials released for Free RPG day are under contract: they cannot be released via other venues for 30 days.

Running D&D in a boardgame style

Defensive much? Pick a fight elsewhere, I'm not interested.

Running D&D in a boardgame style

That's great, but not everyone is looking for a binary experience. Some people want more than a board game but less than a full rpg. Since the OP was talking specifically about using 4e to make something somewhere in the middle your black and white options aren't really relevant. Like I said...

Running D&D in a boardgame style

Those are all valid choices but all save 1 are out of print IIRC. Descent is a good game, but the question is why would you choose that over the ability to have a deeper experience using 4e sans any roleplaying? And get a game that's much more expandable to boot? I have Descent and all the...

Running D&D in a boardgame style

I would say whatever way you want, borrowing campaign rules from games like Descent would work well. Take at look at the rules for the "Road to Legend" rules here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/descent_support.html 4e provides a richer combat experience, you could easily use it instead of...

Treasure of Talon Pass - A Review w/ SPOILERS

So how exactly does free RPG day work? Is a store only likely to have one copy of each game to give away?

FantasyGrounds Takes Legal Action Against WotC

This is not legal advice: You can do a lot more than that legally actually. Of course there's nothing stopping from WotC from suing you even if you're in the right, which can be extremely costly.

First 3rd Party Product available already...

Unfortunately too many people don't get that. Particularly over on Gleemax you see people going apeshit as if the GSL is the only way to get 4e stuff published. ;)

First 3rd Party Product available already...

I'm hoping most 3rd party publishers broker a separate deal. Even if it meant paying royalties, I'd rather see better content than what is allowed under the GSL. Of course that's personal preference...

First 3rd Party Product available already...

No third-party GSL products can come out sooner than July 1. Not "no third-party products". There is an important distinction.

First 3rd Party Product available already...

Are you sure Goodman is releasing their product under the GSL? It's one of the reason's I'm looking forward to Free RPG day as well.

podcast: 4th edition combat too long

IMO they shouldn't have released this. It does a bad job of making the game look exciting. If the intent was to entice new players I really think they failed. Maybe that wasn't the intent though, it was filmed before release so maybe it was just intended to be a preview.

Will lack of 3rd party support affect your 4E play?

Yes and no. I'm only interested in modules tbh, and maybe campaign settings. The GSL as written is useless as far as I'm concerned so I'm hoping some of the better companies ignore it and broker a better license for themselves. So yes because I would buy and play third party modules and no...

    4e D&D GSL Live

Yup. And IIRC that particular clause ("you pay our legal fees") is not enforceable. I'm too lazy to dig up a reference however. Additionally even if it were enforceable they'd have to sue you to get that money as well. And then they'd have to sue you to get the money they used to sue your for...

    4e D&D GSL Live

They can do whatever they want. They don't have to be consistent either, they could revoke your license while allowing someone else to retain theirs for the same "offense". They don't even need a reason. Keep in mind, if you accept the GSL you are playing in their sandbox :) Personally I'm not...

    4e D&D GSL Live

They don't own them, however, if you accept the GSL and publish under that license you'll have to act as if they do.

    Feat: Toughness

I skipped 3e ;) It just seems like a waste of a feat choice for 5 total extra hit points from 1-9, though I haven't run the numbers.
