Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Mass Combat

There's definitely problems with the thing where you simply can't overcome significant gaps in BR, ever. Say you have 20,000 CR 1/2 creatures. They can make 400-creature units, which are BR 80. Now say you have 120 CR 1 creatures. They are a single unit, which is BR 120. The 120 CR 1...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Lore Wizard

The save-swap is insanely good, but restricted by being a 1/rest thing. But it's still insanely good. If I were going to do this, I'd probably nerf it to "the first save changes type". So you can make Hold Person with *one* str save, or dex save, or whatever, increasing your initial chances...

    D&D 5E (2014) What do you do?

Pull a rock from belt pouch, scream into it that we found them and we're afraid they'll escape, then keep fighting.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

Doesn't seem especially odd. One is casting a spell, one is retargeting a spell that lets you retarget.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

It doesn't prevent attacking, but it does prevent casting non-cantrip spells.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hexblade as a fighter archetype

I'd probably start them with one or two spell slots. Consider that, at 3rd level, 3 would be more than the warlock gets until 11th.

D&D 5E (2014) How to deal with Metagaming as a player?

Guys, guys, I have amazing news. Different people approach roleplaying games differently! This is almost certainly a new discovery. ... Actually, though, I want to point out: Discussions like this can be really fun if they're approached as "I'd like to talk about what we do, and hear what...

D&D 5E (2014) Question regarding potential revised edition of core rulebooks

The 3.5 thing was sort of annoying, although I did like the resulting system better. But 5e feels a lot better to begin with.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Wizards & Warlocks -- Hexblades, Raven Queens, and Lore Mastery!

Huh. Is Burning Hex "an attack"? Does it break invisibility? I mean, if I were running it, of course it would, but a friend pointed out that it's not a spell, and neither is the curse, and it has no to-hit-roll or save or anything, so... is it an attack?

D&D 5E (2014) HP thresholds and control: a custom system

    D&D 5E (2014) Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Backstory informs character choices, sure, but that doesn't make it a rule any more than "my idea of my character's personality" is a rule.

D&D 5E (2014) HP thresholds and control: a custom system

This is a fascinating idea. I don't think I like it, because I think part of the point of save-based controls is to give you a way to have options against things with too many hit points. But it's an interesting idea, and I think you have correctly identified something of an issue with weak...

    D&D 5E (2014) Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

I'd call backgrounds "rules" for the most part, with a bit of flavor text.

    D&D 5E (2014) Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

At least one major component of "lore" isn't really rules, because it's backstory. And backstory isn't happening, and it's not a mechanic, so it's nothing like a rule, because rules are what govern how the game plays. History isn't law.

    D&D 5E (2014) Giving Fighters nice things...

I am pretty sure fighter is very close to Best Class already, why would you buff them?

D&D 5E (2014) Unperceivable, Perceived, Hidden - an attempt to clarify invisibility and hiding

D&D 5E (2014) Why do so many DMs use the wrong rules for invisibility?

I think it was rec.games.frp.dnd, the basic argument was that the spell doesn't say it makes things transparent so you can see through them, therefore you just "don't-see" them, so if you had an "invisible" door, you wouldn't see the space behind it, you just wouldn't perceive the door. This...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do so many DMs use the wrong rules for invisibility?

I once saw a genuine dispute about invisibility rules, to wit: If you make a door invisible, can people see the room behind it when it's closed? This was a serious argument on which people had differing opinions.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you restrain a captured spellcaster?

You can in 3E and later, though. I got the dialogue wrong; it was "beating you up makes you forget your spells?" -> "not since third edition came out", or something to that effect. It was ~17 years ago, I don't remember exactly anymore.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever let players stack skills?

In one of our homebrew classes, intended to be roughly parallel to rogue for some purposes, we replaced Expertise with "if you have both tool and skill proficiencies applicable to a task, you can stack them".
