TSR Jim Ward: Demons & Devils, NOT!

I'll deny it. I know at least one hermetic tradition person, and I know D&D, and there's not even the loosest similarity there once you get past "the word magic".

Yeah, I do portrait mode too -- my main display is 1600x2560.

    D&D and the rising pandemic

What are the assumptions/specifics going into the "are going to starve to death" number? Are you including the usual rate at which people starve in the world anyway, which is pretty high but not really related usually? All the economic research I've seen on epidemic/pandemic circumstances...

    D&D 5E (2014) psychic scream: 0hp or killed

Player knowledge and character knowledge are distinct. The special-casing of "dying" for "monsters" is one of the few cases where the abstraction leaks such that a sufficiently insane wizard can perform an actual test to determine whether something's a PC. Wizards: Wall Of Steel, Fourth Wall Of...

    D&D 5E (2014) psychic scream: 0hp or killed

Yes, yes I do. I am active on a programming slack server and they added a :seebsno: emoji after a while. :) My thought is that if the head-exploding thing happens only if something is outright killed by the spell, it's just flavor text. If it's intended to happen at 0hp, which some people seem...

    D&D 5E (2014) psychic scream: 0hp or killed

I don't know, but that's the logical application of (1) "if this kills a creature" and (2) the thing saying that some GMs will not bother with death saves for "monsters". :P It doesn't seem useful, really, but hey, it's a 9th level spell, it should admit creative interpretations. :P

    D&D 5E (2014) psychic scream: 0hp or killed

Psychic scream causes head exploding if it kills a creature. Options: 1. They meant "if it reduces the target to 0hp". 2. They meant "if it does enough damage past the creature's current hit points to exceed its maximum hit points". 3. It is either of those, depending on whether the GM causes...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Or want to look it up for any reason. I have looked things up in both 1e and 2e rules within the last week...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

I wrote a thing which parsed one of the formats from the premade rules and converted them into pretty-printed searchable HTML complete with all the images and stuff. I don't remember where, but it's still floating around somewhere.

D&D 5E (2014) 5e "Anyspell," Would You Allow the Enclosed Spell?

I don't understand; once this exists, what purpose does any other spell of 2nd level or higher have in being prepared?

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

This is an interesting line of argument, but as is so often the case with WotC and PDFs, there are many explanations offered over time, and they contradict each other. There's no evidence on offer that WotC would permit a vendor to sell PDFs. If they aren't willing to license the books as PDFs...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

Okay, that's fair. I guess this thread is moving too fast for me and I'm not tracking correctly, sorry. I think the complaints about "buying the book twice" have some merit, but in practice I expect to have to buy two copies of a book separately, and that's true for physical copies, and also...

D&D General Hey, are we all cool with having to buy the same book twice, or what?

This has nothing to do with whether I can "afford" it. It's that they do not make the product I want. I don't want D&D Beyond. I want a PDF. I don't want a subscription-based access to something elsewhere, I don't want a service that could go down later. I want the book, in a format that I will...

Wait since when can we get PDFs, at all, at any price?

    D&D General Alignment in D&D

I hated 4E's system because it no longer made sense; it omitted combinations which clearly existed and basically turned "lawful" and "chaotic" into intensifiers; lawful good was just "more-gooder" and chaotic evil just "more-eviler" without actually making sense. I remember interminable flame...

    D&D 5E (2014) Scientist background

I dunno, I don't see physicists doing anything to protect us, and the biologists and epidemiologists are why we're talking about such tiny numbers in the first place. (Without them, it'd be a lot worse, and it'd seem a lot more normal.)

D&D 5E (2014) When RAW goes too far

I am reminded of the vehement argument I once saw on whether or not you could see through an invisible door, with one argument being that nothing says explicitly that you can see through it, so you don't see the door, but that doesn't mean you see anything BEHIND it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Aspurgers/autism effects?

Confusingly enough, it can be the other way around. Sometimes. I'm often going to miss "easy" social cues, but I will pick up rediculously subtle things just because I'm more attentive to them. Analogy time: Completely colorblind person with a spectrometer who's studied color theory. I can't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aspurgers/autism effects?

What I can't figure out is how I'd play a character who wasn't autistic.
