Interesting thought on everything going on

It makes sense for WotC to adopt a two-pronged strategy: 1) Essentials books in stores to attract attention and bring in new players or lapsed players of earlier editions, and 2) advanced material on DDI where there is no such thing as a book that gets deeply discounted and remaindered to the...

    Thief + to hit crazy?

Yes to both. I am quite taken with the archetype of the Escape Artist -- the Rogue or Thief who simply cannot be pinned down, who escapes restraints, grabs, magical effects, etc. with ease and aplomb. Throw in high speed and you have a character who thrives on the fringes of combat -- a...

    Thief + to hit crazy?

You raise a valid point that I have been considering for a while. I have two answers to it. 1. There is probably going to be one more melee character in the party. That character can team with the defender and get full benefit of the defender's retaliation techniques. 2. The Thief can start...

    Fighter At-Will Questions

That's not bad logic, but I've found that in general it is better to increase the utility of the things you use 95% of the time and let the other party members deal with the 5% when your choices are less than ideal. And though you did not mention it, please tell me you are taking Defend the...

    Ampersand: 2011 releases officially gutted

Scribble sent me to tell you that we have seen the bright side at the end of the tunnel, or possibly on the greener side of the fence. There is a silver lining to this mushroom cloud, and it's always darkest before the swarm. Feel better now?

    Interesting observation, if accurate.

Just because the cliché exists doesn't mean that it is correct or that WotC believes it is correct.

    Thief + to hit crazy?

Maybe I did miss the point, who knows. I certainly agree with you that DPR is too regularly the topic of the day. For myself, I love defensive feats, but they have to be worth taking -- Dwarven Durability, Superior Fortitude and Will (but Superior Reflexes, not so much) are all awesome...

What to do with all that treasure?!?

That may be true for most players, but there will be a subset who want something more, and not just for the sake of "more": the Tacticians. For them, a simple level 2 item like Boots of Adept Charging open up all sorts of cool possibilities. You can get the same effect by turning the items...

    Thief + to hit crazy?

I didn't miss your point. I simply assumed that by "insist on" you meant "must, in order to maximize the utility of their character" as opposed to "because they are always controlled by stupid players, decide to". Because, you see, in the latter case it is not a problem with the class but with...

    Difficult Player

Just be careful not to pin that label prematurely. I suspect that my character may look like that occasionally in our campaigns, when in fact I'm trying to do what I would like ALL of my fellow players to do: roleplay the details of their characters more. (Nutshell: Roleplaying is more than...

BTW, if the Shade truly does get additional feat or power options that turn the One With Shadow power into a useful feature, wouldn't it make sense to drop some hints in the preview article? Shouldn't the Shade preview work to make players say "Damn, I need that book -- the Shade lets me build...

    Difficult Player

A Half-Orc Barbarian | Fighter is concerned about failing an Athletics check using a rope to climb down 2 stories? Is it even possible for that character to fail that check? I smell a fish, a rat, and some sort of hybrid ratfish.

    Difficult Player

I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that the character in question had no particular reason to go through the roof, and that doing so was the equivalent of opening your car door too take out a pedestrian as you drive by. If that is not the case, the OP should tell help us out by giving more details.

I wasn't making fun of you. I was just doing what I normally do, which is quote accurately and then correct where correction is due. I didn't mean anything by it. Anyway, my kyboard does the same thing somtimes.

    January and Beyond!

Huh? Are you really saying that a player who combines a race with stealthy features + a class with stealthy features cannot reasonably expect the resulting character to be effective? If the key to your point is the word "ex[c]eptional", all I can say is that I did not use that word myself. I...

    Difficult Player

In the old days, a character like that would have been called "chaotic stupid". They don't belong in D&D outside of humorous campaigns. I mean, groups can play any way they like, but that behavior violates pretty much every precept of roleplaying in a group.

    Thief + to hit crazy?

But they don't have to get into the middle of combat. The Thief, at least, can almost guarantee CA on ranged attacks with just a few feats and the right Tricks.

I would XP Saeviomagy for this if I could. The point about building to an archtype and expecting it to be effective is an important one.
