What non-"essential" characters do you play?

Interesting -- I want to do a Valorous Bard myself some day, but I would be multiclassing for the skill training, daily heals, etc., and not to improve fighting ability. What is your current level, and approximately how many THP do you hand out in a typical encounter? Do you feel that those...

What non-"essential" characters do you play?

I have a level 13 human Swordmage who turned out to be completely non-Essential in the last combat, due to me rolling a 1 four times and hitting a total of twice for perhaps 25 damage total, the final hit of the combat landing only because I used Heroic Effort to boost my roll. Aside from that...

    Stats Below 8

The proper role of an Int 4 Fighter in a skill challenge that requires Intelligence is to walk over to a pointed-at corner and sit quietly until the others have finished decoding the runes. Thumb twiddling is optional, provided that one's Dex score isn't also below 8. The proper role of a Str...

Why are single target powers stated as Close Burst?

They could have avoided all the complexity by adding one more keyword. "Safe": A safe power does not provoke OAs.

    The Scout and ranged attacks

In isolation, your first sentence is a good observation; but I fail to see what it has to do with the OP's concern about lack of effectiveness with ranged attacks. Did you accidentally hit Submit before you had finished composing your reply?

    Runepriest Article Bumped Again!

The article and the items that it describes are fine, in isolation. As an example of how DMs can adapt the Boon concept for specific class mechanics, it is excellent. As an effort to make the Runepriest class more interesting, capable or playable, it is a disaster. For example, at least...

    Runepriest Article Bumped Again!

You obviously haven't read an issue of Wired lately. If they thought it would make them seem cool and hip, they would gladly go in any of the above directions.

    Stats Below 8

That was my point above. Just as IQ is a single number that conveys a kind of weighted average over a broad sweep of abilities (memory, geometric analysis, mathematical ability, etc.), a single ability score covers a number of things. For example, a high Dexterity canonically means one is both...

Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms - rogue ??

Whoa, what? I'm just saying, if you take both Cunning Stalker AND the Tactical Trick power, then you already have every possible benefit you can get from Ambush Trick. Every one. You have CA against enemies who have no creatures at all adjacent (via Cunning Stalker), and you have CA against...

Rules clarification Re: Opportunity attacks and Pushing

Yeah, I'm probably dead wrong, or the post I was referencing is. I can't find any evidence of it now. I will leave up my original post to retain context for later commentors, and as a reminder to myself that I can't just stop taking my meds and expect people not to notice. [ But I'm not doing...

Rules clarification Re: Opportunity attacks and Pushing

I hate to say it, but the analysis I've seen over on the WotC boards says it doesn't work that way. The actual attack (which is NOT an OA, even though you would think it is) interrupts the enemy's attack, but the sequence is: 1. Melee Basic Attack against enemy 2. Enemy attack against your...

    Stats Below 8

As I see it, ability scores are a statistical concept that can be modified for the sake of roleplaying, DM cooperation provided. For example, I have a Wizard PC who is very very smart (starting 18 Int) but only knows one language. It's part of her background, and I use it in roleplaying...

D&D 4E New to 4E looks for tips (Rogue)

Could be a +1 on charisma checks or on charisma-based skill checks, but the latter would be awfully good and the former would be... well hell, does anyone ever do a vanilla charisma check?

Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms - rogue ??

Yes, but if you have an ally next to the target, you can get the same result (CA) from Tactical Trick, which has fewer restrictions and a better movement clause. In other words, if you have Cunning Stalker and Tactical Trick, Ambush Trick never gives you any benefit.

Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms - rogue ??

The first is situational, the second is highly dependent on equipment (Armor of Dark Deeds makes it almost guarantee permanent CA), and the third is pure gold all by itself. I started a thread a few weeks back about whether the third one (Cunning Stalker) is melee-only or can be used at range...

Definition of "ally who can see you"?

Right. As I said, it's defined as a geometric concept and nothing more. So does anyone have any more suggestions or clarifications? Any comments on my "not sure" item? I'm also wondering how I should categorize "total concealment" and "superior cover" -- my additional reading makes me think...

Definition of "ally who can see you"?

I don't know if I'm looking at the official latest revised rules, but I do have HotFK, and looking at page 69, I see that Line of Sight is defined entirely geometrically and with references to obstacles, but with no regard to the status of the sight-er or the sight-ee.

Definition of "ally who can see you"?

My Swordmage just received a Pennant Helm, which gives a benefit to "each ally who can see you". I'd like to compile a list of conditions that would prevent an ally from seeing me, and those that would not, even though they seem kind of related. Please chime in if I missed something. Prevents...

Wizards getting character choice feedback from CB

You obviously haven't read any of the old April issues of Dragon. The good folks at WotC are endlessly inventive.

    Essentials classes question

Remember the advice that, in a conversation, one should be listening while the other person is speaking, and not simply planning what to say next? Well, might we not apply that to RPG encounters? Maybe we would gain by watching attentively while our allies take their turns, instead of...
