What are you reading in 2024?

The White Ribbon Runs the Red Lights - Blake Michael Nelson - Part of his Signalverse series of short superhero novels. I saw a recommendation for this series from Lawrence Watt Evans and decided to check it out. This book appealed to me most, so I picked it up - most of the books are...

What is the single best science fiction novel of all time?

The Mote in God's Eye, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Classic sci-fi era meets modern sci-fi, military adventurism, first-contact, space mystery - this has it all.

What are you reading in 2023?

Finished up The Traitor, the last book in The Covenant of Steel by Anthony Ryan. One of the best fantasy series I've read in many years. Low-magic grim and gritty war story.

What are you reading in 2023?

Been a big hurdle for me as well, which is one reason to never, ever find out anything about any creative's personal life :) After the Sad Puppies business - whereupon he took a giant messy crap in someone else's living room and expected people to thank him for it - and his various screeds, I...

What are you reading in 2023?

The Grace of Kings (Dandelion Dynasty, The) by Ken Liu (Author) - #1 in the four book Dandelion Dynasty series. Very good book, and I would say that the first book does an excellent job of being a stand-alone book as well, in case getting into a four-book (and these are not small books)...

    Unpopular opinions go here

The vast majority of Appendix N was written before 1970. Gygax's personal taste shouldn't be the baseline.

🏳️‍🌈Pride Month- Celebrating Representation in TTRPGs🏳️‍🌈

The first LGBT+ representation I can remember seeing is in Chaosium's adventure At Your Door (1990), set in modern day Not-San-Francisco. One of the lawyers you encounter has a young man as his live-in, and in the side-adventures, the two Wiccan dudes are described as 'discrete lovers'.

    State of Comics in 2023?

The current Nightwing series is a delight. Nightwing 1: Leaping into the Light is where I'd start. Word's Finest and it's soon-to-be-out companion Teen Titans book are set in the 'recent past' where Dick is still Robin, and Batman and Superman are best buddies.

Pathfinder 2E What Are The Changes In Pathfinder Remastered?

Interesting that alignment is such a big discussion point. Chuck it entirely.

What are you reading in 2023?

Back to reading SF! I started off with Mickey 7 and it's sequel Antimatter Blues - it's been highly touted and there is a movie or show adaptation coming soon. I hope they get it right because this show absolutely will live and die with the 'voice' of Mickey. His personality carries the entire...

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

I think that in general, things should not be 'scrubbed' but you absolutely must be sure that when you do present such content that it is not presented in a way that perpetuates stereotypes; this can occur through simple inattention to the actual source material. When you build out everything...

Warner Bros wants to make Lord of the Rings films. Not remakes, fyi.

Once they have some cast and a director, etc, on board, it might be worth paying attention to. Otherwise, with all the money problems WB is having lately, this sounds much more like hand-waving to placate the nervous investor class, and keep them from dumping WB stock. This is something it would...

What are you reading in 2023?

Finishing up Elizabeth Bear's Lotus Kingdoms series. It's a great ride, with multiple viewpoints across three major factions. There are some interesting ideas for D&D magic, since we get 3-4 different schools of thought on what magic is and how it works and where the power of a wizard comes...
