PCs using their abilities - a favor to the party?

Thanks for putting words into my mouth. But to address your conclusion: Feel free to assume I'll do "my part." Assume away. I'll probably do what has to be done. Just don't tell me when and how I'm supposed to do it, like I'm your personal trained monkey or employee. ... I think you missed that...

PCs using their abilities - a favor to the party?

My PC portrayal in-game is very much the same as my personal attitude in life: I share my gifts when it's the right thing to do or if I want to do it -- they're mine to give. But the moment someone expresses *expectation* that I must do something is when I shut down or start talking about a job...

    Are we there yet?

OK, I'm going to draw a line through the middle of the forum. THIS side will be Piratecat's ... ------------------------------------------------ ... and everything on THIS side is mine. If he crosses to my side of the forum, I'm telling. (Are we there yet? Huh? HUH?)

    Are we there yet?

If Piratecat gets a 4th rendition PHB, I want mine with extra errata.

    D&D Races and Global Warming

I know what humans would do: not a whole heck of a lot. Can't trust them liberal elves and their touchy-feely weather forecasting baloney. If they had their way, we'd all be hugging trees instead of chopping them down to make more houses.

    Are we there yet?

Not fair -- Piratecat got the better card! I want his. My friend Lakeith says he already played 4th attrition with his cousin on vacation. He said it's got pictures of girls with boobies, and some new race that's really cool because it's half-demon or something.

    Are we there yet?

    OK. Let's play the "Quiet Game." . . . . . . . . . .

    Are we there yet?

I think I see 4th addition up ahead. Is that it? How about that? Is that it? I need to pee.

    Description of class roles

I prefer the social role structures that characters take when meeting NPCs: Peacemaker -- gets everyone to be nice to each other. Inquisitor -- responsible for asking a bunch of questions. BS'er -- distracts/aggravates by making a fuss about knowing everything. Nodder -- supports others by...

How Much is That Fighter in the Window?

The difference is that now when you leave the game at the end of the night, some other user is going to swoop in and take all your stuff. ??? We're talking about online multiplayer games, right?

    Description of class roles

Oh, man. That sort of attitude really makes me dread this new iteration. I might as well start playing Weary of Wastecraft.

    Description of class roles

The roles are Human Torch, Thing, Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic. Seriously, though, I can't imagine playing a D&D campaign in which you're identified primarily by the role you serve in a combat unit. I seriously hope WotC avoids including those terms in their products.

    Are we there yet?

Piratecat keeps touching me. Make him stop touching me. Stop it! I didn't wanna go to 4th admission. I don't know why we couldn't stay home with 3rd. 4th sounds like it's gonna be stinky. Who's gonna have any fun without bards and g'nomes to play with? I WANT MY BROKEN RANGER!!! ... Now...

    Are we there yet?

Are we there yet? Are we? Huh? Well, are we there yet? Are we there yet? When are we gonna get there? Is that it? How about that? Are we there yet?

And another reason I hate the term "fluff" . . .

I think "fluff" and "crunch" are both lazy excuses for atrophying writing skills, in much the same way that smilies are overused to imply emotional content. What is it someone doesn't like about a gaming product? "It's all fluff, not enough crunch." And what does that mean, exactly? "You know...

Full circle: D&D now being based on video games...

The examples given were weak and easily argued against. But, yes, I agree with the core message. The proliferation of online multiplayer games and home videogame systems are driving much of D&D's new edition design.

D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

If you read the descriptions verrrrrrry closely and fill in the blanks, it becomes aparent that Karhun is actually another character's familiar. Intriguing, no? That means the primary PCs that haven't been revealed yet must be mega-awesome.
