Will this thread kill the previous thread and take its stuff?

... My newest hated phrase. Quickly rising up the ranks to join the ranks of "X is broken" and "X got the shaft." Any others being born by 4th edition?

    Warlock confirmed in PH1...

If we get warlocks, then we don't need sorcerers. It's the same sort of issue of purpose-duplication and lack of identity that gnomes are suffering from. I'd be OK with sorcerers going away; I've always thought they were sorta flavorless.

Familiars and Animal Companions. Should they stay?

I think wizards should be given the choice of picking either a familiar, an animal companion, or a hot, sexy cohort.

Re literature: I read about wands in the novelization of those Harry Potter movies. Good books, for what they were. Although I was disappointed that the Rawling author (or whatever his name was) added so many scenes that weren't originally in the movies -- seemed sorta cheesy. ... But, yeah, I...

    How to describe a race?

I'm going to use this comment as the example to address others of the same assumption. It's not that anyone believes fantasy race refers to the real world, but that it reminds them of a problematic real world issue and makes light of it. Now, whether you (inclusive anyone "you") here think...

Familiars and Animal Companions. Should they stay?

I agree strongly with paragraphs 1 and 2, but I disagree with 3. I've never had a problem running a critter-character as an interactive component of the adventure, and I would be disappointed if they were reduced to a simple math modifier.

    How to describe a race?

I agree mostly. And I'd rather get people to stop confusing the issue in the real world than limit its use in fantasy. Darn that overlap between gaming and life. Darn it all to heck.

    How to describe a race?

Huh. Well, that would seem to do the trick.

    How to describe a race?

(An aside and warning: We should probably be very careful of our comments on this topic. Previous discussion on race-identification issues and their overlap into the gaming environment have been deemed inappropriate for this message board.)

    How to describe a race?

Unfortunately, it's a valid concern because in our real world the term "race" is loaded with a lot of stupid assumptions. It's largely nonsensical as we use it today, an artificial way originally intended to lump people together by skin color or other superficial features. Here's a decent...

    New Design: Wizards...

I can't imagine what mechanic benefits the magical "traditions" will provide. But I'm guessing the roleplaying intent will be akin to the intent behind current clerical domains -- i.e. providing ready-made social structure for players to tap into (wizardly traditions, clerical churches), or not...

So? It's not as though someone could "have at it" to any great effect.

    New Design: Wizards...

Last time I played a cleric, I chose the animal and healing domains and defined the character's beliefs as a variant interpretation of the religion of Ehlonna. I wanted something that was outside the given god description, so I made made it myself in accordance with the rules. True, the DM had a...

Which spells do you usually imagine linked to an orb, staff or wand? (Tome optional)

Nice points. Very valid. But thank you for sticking with the original topic. Those other issues are being covered ad nauseum in the bigger-overview thread about Wizards. I was trying to avoid thread-cloning.

    New Design: Wizards...

(shudder) I just had the most disturbing premonition that 4th edition will be bumped to an April 1 release date, at which point they'll gleefully explain why all this information was being jerked around. ... Talk about an elaborate set-up. :uhoh: I shall be deeply impressed.

Which spells do you usually imagine linked to an orb, staff or wand? (Tome optional)

I think perhaps my expectations are tied to (personal) metaphorical representations of the items. As I said earlier, for example, wands are finger-pointing devices, which can imply placement ("It's over THERE") or targeting like a gun. So spells that have those effects or intentions should be...

Which spells do you usually imagine linked to an orb, staff or wand? (Tome optional)

For the sake of discussion, why do you feel that a ball of fire or a cone of ice are more appropriately cast from a staff than a wand? Is it because the resulting effect is potentially larger and therefore it's implied that they would require a larger origination tool? Because one could say...

Which spells do you usually imagine linked to an orb, staff or wand? (Tome optional)

Related follow-up: I've already seen some references (in other threads) to casters sticking an "orb" at the top of a staff. But the orb I envision isn't really staff-mountable -- it's larger and pretty heavy, larger than a softball but no bigger than a bowling ball; it would make a staff...
