Take A Peek At The Sunless Citadel From Tales of the Yawning Portal

The FR description is really bland. I always thought the tree was perfect as something relating to a cult of Moander. Now that would actually feel Realmsish.... I'm wondering how long before WotC works out the difference between parley and parlay.... ;)

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

I wonder how much influence Savage Worlds had on the design of 4E? I can see a few things: - fewer powers plus the emphasis on re-skinning; - PCs (wild cards) vs minions (I forget the SW term); - monsters built differently to PCs; and - simplifying things for the DM. I am sure there are more...

Any interest in a systemless, "shared world" environment?

I don't like shared worlds because you end up with the worst elements of bad pastiche such as silly names including anagrams and puns. I like my worlds to be "straight" and a sensible naming system is part of that. Look at FR: You have Ed Greenwood going to a lot of trouble to create a naming...

    Fortune Cards in gameplay

I never used them. Frankly, my PCs have enough to manage already so I didn't want to add something else for the players to have to think about. Maybe they're interesting in organised play but, for a home group, I would prefer to leave this sort of thing for my DM notes. Sorry I am not making a...

    Comic relief in game

    Wonderful post!

Looking for the title of a specific module or a boxed set

It was Lands of Intrigue, a 2E boxed set for the Forgotten Realms primarily covering Amn and Tethyr. The cover art was by Todd Lockwood.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you love Awesome Names?

Hyperbole, of course. I learnt to talk to my players about 36 years ago. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Do you love Awesome Names?

On the topic of context, look at the rest of my post which you did not quote: I run FR. That name doesn't fit with my vision of FR, nor that of my players (especially the French names - yeah, I would know). African names would, indeed, fit with certain parts of FR, such as Chult. I know we had...

D&D 5E (2014) The Shadow in the Flame: A Workshop on Designing Dungeons, Monsters, and a Villain

This is really useful. Thanks for posting. And I really need to check out mindmeister. That looks like it would be more convenient than my usual brainstorming on a whiteboard! :)

D&D 5E (2014) Do you love Awesome Names?

I don't allow real world names, joke names, or names with superfluous apostrophes. This is one of the few hard and fast rules of my games and I will happily kill a PC with a bad name. I run Forgotten Realms normally and I have a spreadsheet with a list of nearly 5,000 names by Ed Greenwood so...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

The more things changes, the more things stay the same.... :D

D&D 5E (2014) Seeking details for 5e Neverwinter beyond SCAG.

I forgot to clarify: I wasn't suggesting a return to the 4E rules - I only spruik 4E in 4E threads - but a return to the 4E material for Neverwinter. That said, FR5 The Savage Frontier for 1E probably had more effect on my Neverwinter campaign than the Neverwinter Campaign Setting! :)

Thanks. I expect that The Speaker in Dreams will form a major part of my next Neverwinter campaign too.

D&D 5E (2014) Seeking details for 5e Neverwinter beyond SCAG.

Thanks for your continued patience, encouragment, and enthusiasm. The first draft is up: <here>. The post is up now and some mention is made of the schemes of the aboleth although I will need to go back and edit that section to give additional detail and clarity. I would also recommend to you...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

That's nice. He has an opinion. He's also the designer who did more to botch 4E than any other. Look at his credits: Keep on the Shadowfell, Pyramid of Shadow, Heroes of Shadow. Yep, I included that last one because, while every other 4E designer got better at the system, he arguably got worse...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Exactly. We use to mark everyone's positions on graph paper in pencil and, as the character was moved, we erased the old mark and made a new mark. Low tech, to be sure, but it was the only way to be fair about positioning in a game that involved, inter alia, the lightning bolt and fireball...

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

Exactly. One of the things that won me over with 3E when it first released was that it recognised this was a problem by hardwiring the need for a grid and minis into the rules. (Yeah, yeah; I know I am not supposed to say that because only 4E required minis and a grid according to "conventional...

D&D 5E (2014) Seeking details for 5e Neverwinter beyond SCAG.

I've looked at the SCAG entry and it seems that all the cool stuff from 4E simply no longer exists. Solution? Go back to 4E. It's a great take on the city that means it is rife with adventure possibilities. You may also have seen my blog - my-realms.blogspot.com - which hasn't been updated for...

Great to see your campaign back on track. As Oliver Twist so famously said, "More, please!"

Speculation about "the feelz" of D&D 4th Edition

But it's not self-evident. You see a "mechanical departure"; I see a natural evolution of where 3.5E had taken D&D. Nope. My mistake was assuming you lacked the same long experience that I have had, especially as it seemed you weren't looking at 4E from a holistic point-of-view. Looked at...
