    D&D 5E (2014) Trouble in Red Larch - embellishments?

I've been wanting to do a series of blog posts providing extra information about some of the FR locations in PotA to allow DMs to expand it using existing Realmslore. Thanks to Real Life intruding, I've only done three posts but I think that if I ran a campaign in that area, I would actually go...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

If Chris Pramas or Rich Baker or Monte Cook or Creighton Broadhurst (Raging Swan) or Chris Perkins or (I can keep listing people) pop in I will happily play fanboy. But for those whose work I don't like, I will comment on that if it's consistent with the topic of the thread. BTW, I don't like...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

I'm a fan of both Howard and Tolkien, but I also don't read much fiction and fantasy fiction makes up a small subset of the fiction I do read. rets82, you need a little bit of training in logic. This makes no sense. Hating or disliking Drizzt suddenly doesn't reduce the number of novels in...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

Yes, it's surprisingly good. But have you read FR9 The Bloodstone Lands, his only other RPG credit with TSR? One of the Nar tribes he named is Far Quey. Yep, f*** you. No wonder he went on to name his dwarves so badly (Pikel, for example, was his version of "pickle" because he thought it would...

Cure: One step closer to understanding?

Cure: 1250-1300; (v.) Middle English curen < Middle French curer < Latin cūrāre to take care of, derivative of cūra care; (noun) Middle English < Old French cure < Latin cūra I suspect that this is one of those times where American regional (mis)use of an English word has caused a problem...

    Exalted Deeds/Vile Darkness - Broken?

Book of Vile Darkness has some good material. Exalted Deeds is just garbage. I am happy I bought the former; I wouldn't even pirate the latter. (To my shame, I actually bought the Book of Egregiously-bad Design and still own it. I even allowed the touch of holy golden urine in my game. [That's...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

Personally, I have a soft spot for The Crystal Shard. There's a lot to like about that first book. My problem is not with the presence or absence of Drizzle D'schnizzle, per se: for me, R A Salvatore and Troy Denning are simply two authors I don't want anywhere near the Realms (or, in the case...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

Perish the thought! :) Think about George Lucas and Star Wars. The first movie was brilliant... and then the prequels came along and we saw something that had devolved into what was, at best, a parody of its former brilliance. RAS is a lot like that, without the brilliant bit. And every novel...

    D&D 5E (2014) Forgotten Realms Questions (Moonsea)

Ignore the adventures though, as most are garbage (IMO/IME). And don't try and find links between them: they're really hard to find. But the world material is very good. I would also recommend the 4E adventure from Dungeon 170 (?), Monument of the Ancients, which has a simply superb map of the...

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

No, it's evidence of supremely good taste. I tip my hat toward you.

Perkins' Foreword From OUT OF THE ABYSS

R A Salvatore + Troy Denning? The only reason I'll look at this now is because Green Ronin is behind those two authors are bad enough alone: in combination, I dare not think of what garbage they're capable of emitting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Trouble in Red Larch - embellishments?

Here's a short <post> where I dragged up some other Red Larch-related information from other FR sources. That said, it would all work well enough outside the Realms.

    DRAGON+ Issue 3

Hence the phrases "per se" and "wider release". Oh, and the fact that I mentioned it related to Adventurers League games. :)

I Did Something I've Never Done Before in 38 Years of Gaming...

Actually, I wanted to give XP in a few more places but my crappy Third World connection made that problematic at times. Anyway, great read and I made sure I XPed the ones I really liked. (Grottlepox and his mirrors: brilliant.)
  15. Scrivener of Doom

    DRAGON+ Issue 3

BTW, the adventure included with DRAGON- (sorry, no way am I calling it DRAGON+) is also going to be available as part of this season's Adventurers League adventures. So it's not really bonus content, per se; it's just an early, wider release of something that is going to be available for free...

D&D 5E (2014) Waterdeep Campaign - How to use the Setting in 5e?

If you start small in Waterdeep - choose a ward, choose a tavern, choose a lesser noble house (or more than one: they make good sponsors and/or antagonists) - and then focus on a lesser-known dungeon then you can run something that feels like Waterdeep without feeling like the Sword Coast...

    D&D 5E (2014) Has anyone created a new faction?

For me, factions have always been fundamental to running the Realms, and that's been the case since 2E. The 5E version of factions just added a little bit of official weight to their use but if you look at later 3.5E products - Champions of Ruin (FR), Champions of Valour (FR), Complete... (core)...

    DRAGON+ Issue 3

A free adventure, eh? That sounds like they're experimenting with providing actual content....

    Favourite Adventure Modules

I have never understood why this is still considered obscure (I mentioned it too in my post above). This was/is a genuinely good adventure that has so much potential for adaptation. And that web city of the chitine is simply an amazing visual.
