OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

Yes, been there and done that - and decided I prefer The Four Yorkshiremen as a comedy sketch rather than as a tabletop RPG game design philosophy. Now, about those flasks of oil. They cost 1 gp each. Where will you get the money? Oh, and if they work, you know what an adversarial old school DM...

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

Wasn't that only armour? And daggers and darts were made of metal. If Gygax did write that metal weapons interact negatively with arcane magic then this becomes a classic Gygaxian non sequitur.

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

Unfortunately, it's wizards with darts or daggers as ranged weapons (daggers only in Moldvay Basic). Crossbows weren't allowed. Verboten. And, of course, in true Gygaxian style, there was no underlying rationale for this choice. I agreed with everything you typed, FWIW, but just wanted to...

D&D General Which edition of D&D are you currently interested in?

Well said. I love these editions because they're very anti-Gygax: They're clear. They're focussed. They make sense. I still have a fondness for 3.5E even though it requires too much effort to run (IMO/YMMV). I've been running and playing D&D for 39 years and, as much as 4E is my favourite...

D&D General Finishing Touches For Rethmar

Steal the names, of course. I really do love Ed's names for his Realms NPCs and places. It's probably the thing he does best of all. Thanks, Ed and Morrus, for this outstanding series. I look forward to what's next. (Tharsult, perhaps? And with a pretty please....)

    AD&D 1E Dragon Reflections #30

Kenneth and Glenn Rahman were the creators of the board game Divine Right set in their world of Minaria and including the Eaters of Wisdom as a faction. I daresay that there are a few gamers here of similar vintage to me that have fond memories of that game. Edit: Wikipedia link.

    D&D General All About Cormyr

Nice work. I look forward to more. There is so much Cormyr lore to compile as the other person liking your posts - @Jeremy E Grenemyer - will attest as he's done some great work in this regard. Quick correction: The plural of Obarskyr is Obarskyrs; there is no apostrophe.

D&D General Is Bezos a huge D&D fan?

You pay tax on income, not wealth.

D&D 5E (2014) Anna Meyer has just Put out her Latest Greyhawk Map Update

I downloaded one of the maps. None of my devices works anymore. I have no electricity in my house. I think I am stuck in a time warp. Damn you, bit.ly!

D&D 5E (2014) Anna Meyer has just Put out her Latest Greyhawk Map Update

This is marvellous. It really is time for a return to Greyhawk.

    D&D 4E Am I crazy? I've just gotten a hankering to play 4e again...

Definitely. With the exception of Heroes of Shadow (Mike Mearls, lead designer), the design team seemed to finally grok 4E after about two years. I have always liked the AEDU system and still do. But that's a question of taste rather than it being an objectively superior model. Actually, I...

    D&D 4E Am I crazy? I've just gotten a hankering to play 4e again...

4E is my favourite D&D edition and the one that I currently run. I sometimes think I like it because I'm naturally contrarian and assume that anything as apparently unpopular as 4E must be good. I'm pretty sure that was Mike Mearls' influence which resulted in the absolute weakest of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hezrou demon redesign

    1. The 1E Monster Manual included type I to type VI demons; there were no type VII or type VIII demons (except perhaps in Arduin Grimoire?). 2. Type I-VI demons were actually introduced in OD&D's Eldritch Wizardry. 3. On the contrary, it is clear that Gygax (well, as clear as anything could be...

Monte Cook Games’ Next Kickstarter Is Ptolus (for 5E and Cypher)

I think the continued success of 5E has also made them realise that the profit-to-work ratio will be even better than it was a couple of years ago.

Critical Role Explorer's Guide to Wildemount Rockets to #1 In 'All Books' on Amazon

This book may very well end up the smartest thing that WotC has done with/for the D&D brand. I'll be getting that before the Wildemount book! :)

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

Ed wanted a monster potent enough to be a threat worthy of Elminster and other NPCs, but also very mysterious in the way they operate and present themselves so that they can also remind behind-the-scenes and drive intrigue. I rather like them but they're a lot of work to stat up even in my...
