Two New Settings For D&D This Year

This. I think we’re at a point of mutual understanding. There are a lot of variables that we just don’t have access to, especially in sales and polling (I suspect that the “all Realms, all the time” approach of 5E has shifted the percentages of Realms players, home brewers, and “other” a...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

Oh, there's definitely a gamut. Hopefully, my understanding of that basic fact is clear from the ways I've responded, in this thread. There's a minimum level of "real" support. The specific options I've given aren't the only possibilities -- just the ones I've thought of. As much as I'd love to...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

Building from this.... One possible scenario that would fulfill these points would be a PDF on the day of the announcement (per Jester David), plus a formal adventure next year. That would make the PDF sort of an "online appendix" or expansion for the adventure, kind of like they ended up doing...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

He's being cute and doing teasing. If it isn't a physical book, he's being too cute by half (aka: a jerk). You have a point. Not being a Realms fan, I can only speculate, but I think the disappointment had a lot to do with the expectation of a full 3.5 FRCS type book. As an Eberron fan, I'm...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

With the level of build-up, I'm expecting something along the lines of a SCAG for Eberron (or whatever the setting is). There's no way we're going to see a setting book in the vein of prior editions, and that's fine. What I will consider a successful product would: 1) Get something on hobby...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

It's probably a bit of reaction to them trying to set the bar. When you're hungry, the expectation is "food". If Mom says, "I've got dinner planned out" it raises the bar a bit. If an hour later, she says, "You're really gonna like dinner, but I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I'll tell you...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

I've come to the conclusion that the current staff thinks they are much "cuter" (mentally) and better showmen than they actually are. I don't understand the appeal of things like "Stream of Annihilation" and "Stream of Many Eyes".

So, I should be glad that I had no idea what vehicle was actually being used to announce the non-announcement?

What's This Mysterious D&D Book? [UPDATED!]

I also got back into painting miniatures, recently (stupid Gloomhaven and CMON). I've got one of those standing magnifying glasses with the alligator clips for holding stuff, but I also wear my glasses. I'm about to get a big swivel-arm magnifier with the ring of LEDs around the underneath. I'm...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

Eberron is not steampunk. It's relatively easy to bastardize into steampunk, for those so inclined, but it's not intended to be so. With the original "roll 5d4 for stats", DS wasn't so much "hard mode" as "inflated mode". If you used standard character generation, it was definitely hard mode...

What's This Mysterious D&D Book? [UPDATED!]

I gave up and bought reading glasses a couple years ago. The biggest use for them is at the gaming table, whether board or RPG. So, I'd go for a larger font, but not at the cost of the same page count for future books.

Players who think out of the box

Corollary: Never challenge the GM's math when he's the only engineer at the table. (Said as a software engineer who likes statistics.)

You got me thinking. There also aren't a lot of common, real words that begin with the "z" sound, especially written as an "X". I'm sure that' a factor. So... Xanathar is a banana with eye stalks.

    Would you allow this?

This. I'm not a huge fan of innate flight for PCs. Tends to become a major factor in pretty much all adventure design -- which kinda sucks if the GM is walking in expecting relatively "normal" D&D. That said, I see nothing wrong with the player later saying, "I'd really like my wings back."...

Is Primus a Great God or Overgod in 5e?

I had a conversation with someone who explained Enochian magic to me as, essentially, a way to use assembly to tweak the OS of the universe. I'm not sure how accurate of a depiction that is (I haven't found looking through the writings on the topic worth the effort -- too much absinthe or...

    Racial ability score adjustments

Based on the Goliath lore, I think Bard makes a ton more sense than Wizard, especially if they're the keepers of the race's lore -- screams for Loremaster. So, a +1 charisma would drive things in that direction. Maybe some do go for Wizard, but it's more that they mistake knowledge for lore --...

Two New Settings For D&D This Year

It's all aesthetics, so I'm not going to knock your preference. I'll just say that I hated the Xanathar's cover, especially the special edition. Not having to look at the cover was one of the biggest factors in pushing me to buy the DDB version instead of the physical book. Of course, I also...

Survivor Elves, Elves, Elves- WOOD ELF WINS!

Eladrin -1 -- Goodbye. High Elf 25 Wood Elf 33 Elves are mages first, and rangers second. It pains me to kill the eladrin for that reason, but they must go for the good of the whole.
