Ever try PC death at 0 hit points?

I played BECMI and 1E, so... yeah. I prefer the death saves of 4E and 5E. Negative hit points don't really help with a lot of "killing blows" unless you give a stupid amount of negative hit point (like 1/4 max or so).

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Dragonmarks

Huh. I thought aberrant marks were always open to all races. Regardless, this is the exception to my "kill it with fire" comment. Aberrant Marks are freakish and unpredictable.

    Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Dragonmarks

There's no balance reason why other races can't have Marks, but there's a lot of flavor reason. One of my big peeves with 4E Eberron was the space they spent on saying you could add Marks to any race. In other words: I think taking Marks as a template for a home brew variant is fantastic and...

Since the Wayfarer's Guide is still considered playtest, this gives folks a chance to give structured feedback on certain aspects of it. Muy bueno.

    Waterdeep: Dragon Heist First Impressions

How tied to Waterdeep is it, actually? Would it take a ton of effort to convert it to, say, Sharn, or are the NPC and/or faction motivations pretty tightly tied into their identities? Maybe a "scale of 1-10" thing, with 1 being just change the names and the rest is totally generic and 10 being...

Acquiring books (but not reading them)?

I think that's why I'm able to build slowly. I'm in the process of adding about 60 linear feet of built-in shelves in the basements, for the express purpose of holding gaming stuff -- geared toward board games, but there will be space because that's a lot more shelving than it sounds. We'll see...

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

I come here and chat about it. I create rules "patches" for things players want to do that aren't covered in the books. Most of all, I love creating settings, adventures, cultures, etc.

Acquiring books (but not reading them)?

I go through cycles. Moves, fits of pique, and new editions have periodically prompted me to purge blocks of books from my collection. Most recently, I started working from home, which has caused me to reevaluate how I arrange my functional space. Last night, I actually ran my few remaining 2E...

What races are left for D&D to do?

You're not wrong -- though, I'd kill the painfully bland halflings and keep gnomes (forest, tinkers can die in a fire). Really, though, I don't have a problem with a plethora of races being statted out. I have a problem with the absurd notion that every race has to be available in every...

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

Perfect! I loathe ketchup and just thinking about the flavor makes me kinda gag. Mustard, BBQ, ranch, salsa, etc. are all fine, but any ketchup will ruin my food. (And, yes, I'm serious. Ketchup is just gross.) So, to take your metaphor, if I go out for a burger, it may come with ketchup, no...

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

The Realms is fairly generic, but what little flavor I've gotten from it I find displeasing. Sort of like LaCroix made from oregano -- which isn't something I'd care to sip from. That's an obviously subjective opinion, but taints my bias in obvious ways. Definitely not something I'd want to make...

I agree that should be the goal, and will accept that's probably their target. I just don't think they hit it very well or often.

If I didn't care about flavor, I'd just play in the Realms.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

This is actually an area where some of the older, generic adventures were more interchangeable. The original ToEE was certainly set in the Flaeness, but it wasn't really anchored there and could be run in any home brew setting with little issue. When you put the adventure into locations with...

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

Yeah. That's pretty much exactly the sort of non-conversion I was talking about as sucking. You can just change the names for some band of thugs, but major players aren't as easily interchangeable. That's not to say that there aren't ways of doing the conversion, but it isn't a 1-to-1 thing...

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

I'd love it, if this is the case. I'd say I'm whatever the the opposite of "cautiously optimistic" is ("hopefully pessimistic?"), though. I think you could take a generic big city adventure and run it in Waterdeep, Sharn, or Greyhawk City, with reasonable effort. Bringing in specific players...

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and the old splintering the fan base chestnut...

Having run PotA in Eberron, the suggestions were kinda half-baked. The groups they suggested to replace the factions were only passingly similar (if that), which means the hooks didn't actually hook. The bits about where to locate the adventure weren't horrible, but weren't particularly...
