    D&D 5E (2014) [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

I agree with you, Ironwolf. I'm still interested in this, but there's something about it. I like that it's got options and such, but I don't know if the options added anything significant to me. And you're right, it's not as clean and simple as the 1st playtest.

D&D 5E (2014) How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

Weren't there tommy guns in the 1e DMG? Or maybe that was a Dragon issue that had WWII German soldiers meeting a fantasy party?

Ability Score Capping... with added Sanity.

If I recall correctly, 1e had racial attribute caps.

    Mike Mearls: Ask Me Anything

I KNEW Monte Cook was an alien!!! But seriously, it looks like Mike answered questions for over 6 hours. Kudos to him for putting in the effort.

D&DN Survey - Click Once and Complete

I just filled mine out a few minutes ago. It basically asked your opinion on the various elements of the game with multiple choice answers. It gives you the opportunity to write comments as well. Some of the things it asks was your favorite version of the game, how long you've been playing...

D&D Next Playtest Package Questions Answered! (Mike Mearls, Jeremy Crawford)

Forgive my ignorance, but was this chat on the Wizards website? I looked for a recap there and didn't see anything being announced.

Healing Fully With Rest - Is It Really That Big of a Deal?

Regardless of how the rules turn out, I'm pretty sure I'm going to incorporate this rest scenario. I am going to say that an extended rest is similar to the one the Fellowship took when it got to Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings. It has to be safe and comfortable with bedrest. I'm going to...

    Skills... WoTC Blog Post

I was going to stick something like that in there but I wasn't sure how the attribute bonuses are going to look. For all we know, a 12 could give no bonus.

    Skills... WoTC Blog Post

Hmmm, is it just me or does anyone else think we’re going to get something similar to this? Scenario 1: Player: I want to pick the pocket of that guy there, hoping to get the key so we can unlock the door. DM: Okay, the DC is 16. Player: My dexterity is 14 but I have a +2 for larceny due to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would a 5E Kickstarter Fly?

Yeah, and that works so well in the American political system. But seriously, they should develop the game THEY think will best meet their objectives.

    Rogue Design goals . L&L May 7th

I don't believe that's how surprise works. Normally, characters are surprised on a roll of 1 or 2. The number of segments a party is surprised for is represented by the number rolled. For example, if the bad guy rolls a 2, he is surprised for 2 rounds. If the bad guy rolls a 1, he's...

    Rogue Design goals . L&L May 7th

How are you getting 120 pts of damage at 1st level? I played a LOT of 1e thieves and can't conceive anything close to that.

    Rogue Design goals . L&L May 7th

I love playing thieves/rogues as well. I'm certainly liking what I'm seeing. Looks like they're going back to rogues dealing spikey damage.

    "Aggro"

I think you misunderstood my analogy in your first question, but it leads into your third. I think the fighter becomes the biggest threat because it sounds like he's going to consistently put out the most damage. Personally, I don't like the "roles" that seem to have emerged, especially as...

    "Aggro"

Just have the fighter "generate a lot of threat" by being the most threatening character in the fight. With apologies to those of you who don't watch American football, I don't play my fighters like an offensive tackle whose job is primarily to protect the quarterback. I play mine as a middle...

    Flatter Ability Score Bonuses

We played 4d6. I think we had 3 18's total. Cleric - wisdom, Thief - Dexterity (which turned out to be a 19 because he was an elf) and Magic User - Int. Never played with the UA rules. If I had gotten an 18 back then, I would have first looked to see if I could have qualified for paladin.

    Flatter Ability Score Bonuses

I played a lot of 1e. I had no problem playing a fighter with 15 strength. We didn't have anyone with an 18 strength, now that I think about it. For us, that stuff didn't matter. Heck, we almost never looked at our character sheets back then. Just tick marks on scratch paper to track hit...

    D&D 5E (2014) How are you feeling about 5e?

Most of my experience has been with 1e, though I have dabbled in every edition since. I do like what I'm hearing about 5e, though I'm still kind of leery about them bringing back 3e multiclassing.
