D&D 5E (2014) Sure is quiet on the 5e front

I'm assuming we'll get the next packet after they have time to get some "offline" feedback from PAXEast. They might not even put it out until they have time to sort through it all and maybe incorporate it. It's important to remember that all of us who post on ENW/etc. and hang on every word...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Q&A: Martial Healing, Fighter Utility, and Ranger Challenges

The abstraction of Hit Points has been a weakness D&D has had since the beginning. There are ways to do it better (as other systems have shown), but it would require changing HP. Why bother rocking the boat after this many editions? Besides, it wouldn't fit into the design goals for making...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L 3/11/2013 This Week in D&D

The only issue I had with this week's L&L, like most weeks, is that it's empty; it doesn't really say anything at all. Frankly, I'm beginning to wonder what the point of L&L is at all. Compare the content from this article to the content from Rodney's most recent D&D Next Q&A. Why is that...

There are over 80 gamers near me...

No, you've got it wrong. He wants to know what time Russ is getting in. That way it's not like he's sitting around the house all day waiting for him.

Rich confirms what Malack is in this post.

D&D 5E (2014) Why (IMO) fighter maneuvers have gotten worse each packet.

I think rather than have these be separate maneuvers and punishing the Fighter, it might be easier to expand the use of Parry. If you have a shield equipped, you can use Parry against missile attacks. It's more elegant than multiple maneuvers and doesn't punish the Fighter.

    D&D 5E (2014) 28/1/13 L&L D&DNext goals part Four

Let me start with what was perhaps a misconception by myself. I had thought that the Basic/Standard/Advanced scheme was intended to be a narrow measure of complexity. That is to say, they were tuned to the individual player. Want to play a 1E Fighter? Basic Fighter. Want to play a 3E...

    D&D 5E (2014) 28/1/13 L&L D&DNext goals part Four

The more I think about and read about the "dial" analogy, the more well-chosen I find it to be. To re-label Mike's three categories based on the analogy: you can turn the dials on the machine up and down, you can add on new dials (which may also be turned up/down), and you can replace the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New L&L for 22/1/13 D&D Next goals, part 3

You're right, it was a poorly thought out.

    D&D 5E (2014) New L&L for 22/1/13 D&D Next goals, part 3

What I liked the best about this article is that Mike has finally come out and said balancing something like a 19/1 Fighter/Wizard may not be possible. Personally, I don't really think they should be spending too much effort trying to make sure it is. I'm generally against restricting...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L D&D Next Goals, Part Two

I agree completely with this. For a long time there's been a sharp divide between combat and skills, and many attempts to bridge the two have been awkward at best. Skills are entirely designed to work with the narrative versus combat. As such, they should maintain narrative flow, which the...

Multiquotes not cleared in following replies

My guess would be it's a software bug related to vBulletin 4.2.0 than something ENW specific. I haven't tested it though. This thread here on the vBulletin forums is the first thing I found about it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon's Eye View: Celestials

For angels, I like the idea that angels don't have one particular appearance, but appear how they need/want to be at any given moment. In D&D-speak, they would have some sort of Alter Self ability. I think giving them static forms takes away some of their other-worldliness.

D&D 5E (2014) Stuff from your favorite edition you DON'T want in Next

From 2E, a lot of the arcane math, such as THAC0. The math shouldn't be an obstacle to playing. From 3E, the big thing I would like not to be in the game is the "xmas tree effect". It exists in any edition, but 3.X was notable for it. Bonuses should be strictly typed (no untyped/misc/etc)...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Playtest Arena

Welcome to ENWorld! Unfortunately due to recent hacking and getting hammered by spammers, ENW had to implement limited posting privileges for new posters (<10 posts). This includes posting links. The link being talked about is here. You mention not being satisfied with the pace of PbP...

    Dragon's-Eye View - Reimagining Kobolds

If anything, I would move Kobolds slightly in the other direction. That is to say, move them farther away from semi-civilized towards animalistic: Limited intelligence. Smarter than an animal like a dog, but not on par with any humanoid species. Yapping communication, but not really complex...

D&D 5E (2014) What Should the Maximum Level Be?

There's no real mechanical reason to have a level cap. From a business standpoint WotC should allocate their resources towards material they know is going to be used significantly. I don't have access to specific data, so I can't speak to where that data suggests such a cap would be. From...

    D&D 5E (2014) Three proposals for 5e options

I like the idea of condition tracks in general; I think escalating conditions open up a lot more design room both in effects and interaction. Since you specifically mention 5E, I think the idea of using MDD to apply those conditions is more than appropriate (or doing no damage if you don't have...

D&D 5E (2014) 2 types of warrior and 2 types of spellcaster and a perspective

I don't disagree that the basic mechanics should work the same. The mechanical concepts aren't what's wrong with the Rogue, and I've even come around somewhat on them having (specifically) ED/Maneuvers. Like you said, the fundamental mechanics should be generally interchangeable - it's (kind...

D&D 5E (2014) 2 types of warrior and 2 types of spellcaster and a perspective

By that point then there's really no point in having two classes. Just have Fighter, with options for Strength and options for Dexterity. To borrow some 4E parlance, the roles of the Wizard and Cleric were more defined, and so they remained separated. The root of the problem is the breakdown...
