D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I understand that but one also does not have to accept Hussar's premise that sandbox vs. linear play has anything to do with conservatism in gaming.

How do you choose a class?

With D&D 5e, it’s a combination of what subclass sounds cool, has fun abilities I’d like to try, and “I’ve got a character in mind that fits this.” With classless systems, it’s much more about a character archetype or personality that I want to play out - this is often where I lean on tropes...

The thread has morphed into something entirely different.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah, it's not that I don't get the feeling behind it, but at the same time, you create a thread and you maybe try to steer the conversation a bit, but at some point, you gotta let it go whichever way it goes, and hey, maybe start another one down the line if you don't get the answers or...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

When someone uses a word over and over that shows they like saying the word but don’t really understand its meaning and usage.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

I’ve always found that to be a chore as well as getting people back into the mood of the battle is difficult. The energy is usually gone.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

We used to do that when we were younger but it never felt right to us, and I really can’t imagine it now unless there was a natural break or change in the fight. Our DM will stop a session early rather than bump up against a big fight too late in the night (we play on weeknights and I, in...

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

You gotta weigh a three hour session versus the time it takes to kill those last few ghouls or bugbears or whatever.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

No, I think in pretty much every edition there is some concept of morale and against ever escalating losses the monsters are going to surrender or retreat. There’s simply no point to playing out an entire encounter even if it has some sort of stake as far as resource drain because ultimately the...

    An examination of player agency

But then again this is turning into GM Fiat The Sequel and I’m very much not interested in doing that.

Clearly he said a lot of things but it’s also clear that there was an implied better approach hence comments like:

    An examination of player agency

Why is there a need to make an argument if the point for some people is play games and have fun? Who was proposing this “argument”? In the very first post, he created a fantasy “other person” with which to argue? They have a term for that, right on the tip of my tongue…can’t quite place it. Oh...

    An examination of player agency

And I don’t have any issue with how you positioned it vis a vis the creative goals. I’m more interested in the experience of the game and how well the game accomplishes it with whatever rules it uses, I.E. Mothership for outer space horror, or Blades in the Dark for heist games. A game that...

    An examination of player agency

None at all? I’m hard pressed to think of one. I’ve played a railroad or two but I usually even within those there are still key decisions my PC can make to change the outcome. I don’t find the lack of player agency nearly as destructive as some.

    An examination of player agency

Really? Because in that section is this: “The problem isn’t the playstyle – the presence or lack of agency. However - the claims about it, the illusion that the players’ actions matter in games where any or all of the goals of play, permissible moves, processes of play or results are held by...
