D&D General How much do you care about rule change specifics?

As with all things - it depends. If the rules changes/additions are changes I feel benefit the game (1E -> 2E, 3E, 5E), generally not an issue and I'll happily embrace them. If the rule changes/additions either invalid the books I'm actively working with (3E core to 3.5E core) for little...

WotC Would you buy WotC products produced or enhanced with AI?

I'm already using AI for art (my own sucks) and have used it to help get past writer's block or as an editor to things I've already written out. Would I buy a WotC product with AI? Well, yes - I already have a paper copy of Bigby's after all. But I think the quality of it would have to be a...

D&D 5E (2024) Should the environmental conditions scale by tier?

No, it shouldn't scale, but as others stated there may be areas that have unusual and more dangerous that may be traveled to (like going to Death Mountain vs. wandering around the Hamlet of Nutberg). In prior editions of D&D, this was often what the planes were used for. When characters...

Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

I'd actually like both. Having a crew who understands where D&D came from to keep it within the "bounds" of D&D, but new individuals to bring in new ideas and be willing to try out new things rather than simply rehash the old. I really like the creative spark in 2E's heydey where we got a...

Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

If I want to play 5E, I'll play 5E. If I want to play B/X (OSE), I'll play that. I have no interest in mixing them and have no use for the "1 hour actual time torch" of SD.

Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

Same boat. Took a look at Shadowdark and didn't see the appeal - in my 50's and preferring 5E. Though I have been looking for opportunities to resurrect using my 2E books or giving OSE a whirl.

    D&D General Dwarves Domesticated Bears!

Maybe they shouldn't have been wearing bearskins all that time...

    D&D General Dwarves Domesticated Bears!

If an army (such as Hannibal's) can field elephants, bears aren't out of the realm of possibility. Besides, it's fantasy. Just be glad they don't have Bulette cavalry - or are riding purple worms ala Dune.

Jeremy Crawford Also Leaving D&D Team Later This Month

I wish them the best in whereever/whatever they do next. I guess the big tell will be what they get up to after they leave. If they continue to make D&D material independently, I'd point my finger at office politics for the "real reason" they left; if they move on to some other profession I...

    D&D 5E (2024) Species/Racial/Cultural Subclasses

Yeah, 2E had several kits that'd work fine in this respect (some of these are riffing on the original name to be a better subclass). Halfling Whistler (Bard subclass that uses whistling instead of a musical instrument and is good with summonings) Halfling Leaftender (Druid subclass focusing on...

D&D General 2nd edition player handbook class examples.

The one thing that annoys me looking back at the 2E books is it is too "grounded" and worries too much about real history. That goes for the examples individuals for each class. While some are from literature, its what I would call "mundane" fantasy (Tales of King Arthur, Song of Roland...

D&D General What races/species populate your DnD world?

Pretty much all of them, except maybe Warforged, Autognomes and Kalashaltar. I do have some custom races that replace other races: Hellchilde - replaces Tieflings, Aasimar and Genasi. They look human (albino), but when the magic starts flying, they take on an otherworldly appearance...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

Yeah, hiding is often just more than not being seen - it has an element of being quiet/silent. I'm a little unhappy that 2024 only cares about the visual aspect. Further, some creatures can be detected/percieved by smell, but I'm not sure about the idea of using Stealth to mask one's scent...

    D&D General Dwarves Domesticated Bears!

Dwarf Bear cavalry is certainly a thing in my homebrew. But "cuddletime"? Ye gads, we dwarves recruit and train bears the old fashioned way - trap 'em, train em, and give em snacks of goblin captives. Ye don't want these things domesticated - ye want killers.

D&D 5E (2024) Potion miscibility, permanent effects and using potions in the future.

Bit of a tough one, and why I dropped using the table. On #1, you could either roll randomly to see which one takes effect, choose the first one drunken or the second (I think I'd choose the 2nd if you plan to continue to roll these kind of checks). I'd lean towards "choose" and go with the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Reworking the 2024 Hiding rules

D&D no longer uses facing, so conceivably even when you break from cover they may have their back to you or otherwise be looking elsewhere. What comes to mind in particular is something like the Yiga castle in Breath of the Wild where you're sneaking behind the backs of guards and such. Also...

D&D 5E (2024) Programs or Games to visualize Bastions?

There is a Medieval Sims game. If you're willing to use DOSBox, there's Castles and Castles II. As well as Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance (it's more of a country sim). As for Minecraft, the first thing I did in creative mode years ago was build Castle Ravenloft. That was fun. There's also...

    D&D General Bastion Mapping Tools

I use https://www.dungeonfog.com/ for online mapping of any sort. The free version is pretty serviceable (I have a paid subscription). Just be careful about using the lighting tool - it's cool but can slow rendering to a crawl if you get too fancy.

    D&D 5E (2024) What are your 2024 houserules?

Thinking about this some more ... Bloodied could be a condition restricted to living creatures with a circulatory system, and Battered could be applied to objects, constructs and certain undead. From that, you could have effects that work off either - in the case of Battered, we have...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

Well, we already know that light in D&D doesn't work like it does in the real world from the Darkness spell, that emanates darkness. It's also not 3E's lowlight vision, because you can see in the utter darkness where there is no light at all. Even the light spell has lost the ability to be...
