D&D 5E (2024) One D&D origins playtest survey is live

Didn't notice any typos, though sometimes it was hard to predict whether to give written feedback on an initial question or whether there would be a more detailed followup where it would fit better. More importantly, though, the text box for age only allows two characters. This is blatant...

    D&D 5E (2024) Healer Feat

The Character Origins playtest reworks the Healer feat from one oriented exclusively towards nonmagical healing into one that also benefits healing spells. I think that this is a mistake and that the game would be better served by having separate feats focused on these two goals. While the...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&d and alignment: new approach

Ultimately, I don't think it actually matters much whether the books mention alignment. At this point, it's an idea that's out in the world and that exists more or less orthogonally to the mechanical rules of D&D. Players and worldbuilders who find it helpful as description or inspiration will...

D&D 5E (2024) Will Feat Levels Limit Customization?

I suspect you're right about most current feats becoming 4th level feats. I think this would be a mistake, though. While there are definitely a handful of problem cases, the overwhelming majority of current feats strike me as perfectly reasonable for a level one character. And while pushjing...

[META] Can we get the One D&D forum added to the community drop-down?

Some form of link on the main D&D forum might also be helpful.

D&D 5E (2024) Will Feat Levels Limit Customization?

The new Unearthed Arcana previews the idea of feat levels. With only level 1 feats presented so far, it's hard to know what this system will ultimately look like. I am worried, though, that this change will constrain character customization options. This seems most apparent at first level- while...

D&D 5E (2024) What do you want to see excised?

I'd argue the idea of "the multiverse" needs to be excised just as badly as the Forgotten Realms focus. Let individual settings stand on their own rather than treating them as subparts of some larger setting.

D&D 5E (2024) What do you want to see excised?

This would make for a less granular system, but I'm not sure that's what most of the people who aren't interested in high levels actually want. Some, at least, want want to avoid high levels specifically because they aren't interested in playing at the power level implied by high tier spells...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

In combat, wizards have some significant advantages over martial characters (AOE burst damage, number of options), and some significant disadvantages (single target sustained damage, survivability). Focusing only on combat, though, misses a big part of the picture. Out of combat, wizards are...

D&D 5E (2024) Inspiration From Nat 20 Will Bog Down The Game

I suspect fishing for chances to roll will become marginally more common at a lot of tables, but will only rarely be a serious problem. That said, I really don't see the underlying benefit to this change. There are plenty of other ways the developers could add more inspiration to the game, and...

D&D 5E (2024) Suggestion: higher Standardarray instead of the additional +2/+1

Stats can be a major axis for character customization. A fighter with high wisdom and low charisma will play very differently than one with low wisdom and high charisma in terms of out of combat abilities and in terms of what effects they're able to resist. If anything, I'd like to see increased...

D&D 5E (2024) Suggestion: higher Standardarray instead of the additional +2/+1

I'd certainly be in favor of this. Rolled stats already average higher than point buy/standard array, so I'm not sure they'd actually require much adjustment. If they do need to be increased, I'd rather keep the tradition/symmetry of 6 x 4d6 but add some formalized rules for mulligans.

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D and D&D Beyond

I already had an account, though only for the free Phandelver download. Even so, I found it obnoxious to go through the steps of logging into the platform and getting the pdf there when it could just as easily have been posted to the D&D website like every playtest document. I can see how...

D&D 5E (2024) Bonus languages in One D&D backgrounds goes contrary to their other goals

The customization rules in the current PHB allow a total of two language and tool proficiencies (so 2 tools, 2 languages or one of each). I'm not sure why the playtest drops this flexibility, and I'd probably keep it in my own games.

D&D 5E (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

Similarly, I'd expect a lot of confusion about "Inspiration" and "Bardic Inspiration", now that the former is becoming a more prominent mechanic.

D&D 5E (2024) Should we have Level 1 ASIs at all?

One of the most discussed features of the new playtest document is that it shifts level 1 ASIs from race/ancestry to background. This follows the change in Tasha's from fixed to floating ASI. Personally, think that getting rid of fixed racial ASIs is generally a good change, and I think that if...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

I think this is a key point. Imagine there was a 2nd level spell that imposed disadvantage of all of a target's attacks, while itself requiring no attack or saving throw. I think most people would consider that spell to be overpowered. Heat Metal does exactly that to armored targets, so it...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana: Wonders of the Multiverse

On the other hand, if feats with level prerequisites are consistently more powerful, then "normal" feats start to feel like trap choices at higher levels. I'd rather the developers try to keep feats balanced with one another* and reserve level prerequisites for narrow cases where an otherwise...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana Today: Giant Themed Class Options and Feats

Looking at the Primeval Druid, it seems like the name and background description are a lot narrower than the mechanics. While the prehistoric theme certainly has a lot of potential, most of the abilities would be appropriate for any sort of animal companion focused Druid. Personally, I'd rather...

D&D 5E (2014) New Unearthed Arcana Today: Giant Themed Class Options and Feats

There were several in the the Dragonlance UA as well. There, I think they were needed to prevent a level 1 variant human with a background feat from having access to second level spells through a feat chain. Here, where most of the feats in question are stand-alone, I'm not sure it makes as much...
