To all the other "simulationists" out there...

I see. Well, the only way I can respond to that is by repeating something I said earlier. If the guard was meant to be a "mook" and insignificant, then the guard should have had far fewer hit points, which means that he would have been able to be killed in the manner you are describing. The...

Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

Because it was a cool idea and the DM liked the idea of the PC looking badass.

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

Hasn't this been shown over and over in this thread not to be true? Surprise round. Sneak attacks. More sneak attacks if initiative is (likely) won next time. Yes, the sentry could have been killed before ringing the bell--maybe not in one strike, but certainly D&D 3.5 could have handed...

Huge Cover Images from CNET article

Like quite a few posters here, I think that the first cover is shockingly bad but think that the other two are nice.

Never saw that one. Wish the image were larger....

I played MERP--which uses the Rolemaster rules--for years and years and never had to break out the calculator. I'm a English major-type, so you know my math skills are poor. :p

1st level warrior with 5 hp = mook. It didn't take me complicated calculations to come up with that equation. The challenge of the encounter comes not from guard's hit points but from his ability to ring the bell and alert the tower and bring more powerful enemies to the scene.

To all the other "simulationists" out there...

Sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but don't minions usually accompany a more powerful creature? It sounds like this was just a lone guard.... In 3.5 terms, I would have just made him a low-level warrior. In any case, I don't understand why a simple guard would have been so hard to take...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 is Anime! Wait, what?

Based on the examples on the main page that you linked to, I would not call that style anime in the least--animated, undoubtedly, but not anime.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 is Anime! Wait, what?

He's not an adventurer while he's king? Heh. Really, though, Conan wears armor much more often than you'd think. Read the stories--and not just so you can see this point. They are truly awesome.

Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

Yeah, the name Cleave is misleading for sure. It should be Follow Through or something like that.....

Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

This is how I feel when I hear about some crap that has happened in other folk's games. The whole party turning into invisible flying war trolls every combat....brrr. Sick stuff.

Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

This is quite an assumption. In my experience, enemies that are felled by the Cleaving attack are often killed outright by the attack. (I usually just have enemies killed at 0 hit points anyway). Even if they are not killed outright, I haven't found very much reason in my games for EHPs to...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 is Anime! Wait, what?

I can see some criticisms of WAR's work as valid--the way he draws feet and musculature and facial expressions, for example. But his work being influenced by anime? I don't see it one iota. Please refer to the very informational and generally excellent thread about anime that was started...

Cleave: Give me room to work, my minions!

*shrugs* I don't expect everyone to share my opinion, and I certainly won't try to force it on anyone else. It's a personal thing. The old Cleave clicks with me, the new Cleave leaves me shaking my head. Incidentally, I have always imagined that Cleave actually does involve literally...

D&D is dying by the hour

It's a brand of cola that is somewhat popular in certain areas of the US. I think it used to be more popular in the 70s when I was growing up than it is now, but it still has some fans. More info here if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rc_cola
