Hasn't this been shown over and over in this thread not to be true? Surprise round. Sneak attacks. More sneak attacks if initiative is (likely) won next time. Yes, the sentry could have been killed before ringing the bell--maybe not in one strike, but certainly D&D 3.5 could have handed...

I played MERP--which uses the Rolemaster rules--for years and years and never had to break out the calculator. I'm a English major-type, so you know my math skills are poor. :p

1st level warrior with 5 hp = mook. It didn't take me complicated calculations to come up with that equation. The challenge of the encounter comes not from guard's hit points but from his ability to ring the bell and alert the tower and bring more powerful enemies to the scene.

Sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, but don't minions usually accompany a more powerful creature? It sounds like this was just a lone guard.... In 3.5 terms, I would have just made him a low-level warrior. In any case, I don't understand why a simple guard would have been so hard to take...

This is quite an assumption. In my experience, enemies that are felled by the Cleaving attack are often killed outright by the attack. (I usually just have enemies killed at 0 hit points anyway). Even if they are not killed outright, I haven't found very much reason in my games for EHPs to...

I can see some criticisms of WAR's work as valid--the way he draws feet and musculature and facial expressions, for example. But his work being influenced by anime? I don't see it one iota. Please refer to the very informational and generally excellent thread about anime that was started...
