D&D 3.x 4E Simulationism: Did 3.5E Really Do That Good of a Job?

Have you been lucky never to have run into the pervasity of players? I am really blessed these days to have such a great group, but it hasn't always been this way. I have run games for players who seemed determined to make the game misery for everyone involved. It's not as if DM's actually...

D&D 3.x 4E Simulationism: Did 3.5E Really Do That Good of a Job?

If you don't take into consideration the game system when you are creating an adventure, you will likely end up with problems. For example, I might create a wonderful, exciting adventure involving a lot of jumping over pits lined with spikes and swinging from ropes over snapping alligators and...

    Tactical Boardgame?

    Well done, ByronD. ;)

    Tactical Boardgame?

I have gamed at a convention with a pregenerated character and a group of strangers. You are right that I did not roleplay as much as I would have if I had been with my friends, but I still did plenty of roleplaying. Of course, I wasn't trying out a nifty new set of rules, either. Comfort...

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

I had a very remarkable teacher in the 6th grade: Mr. Ordway. He had us read Beowulf and mythology and played classical music for us. He did much to make me a student who loved learning. (He also had us read The Hobbit.) I discovered D&D during this time as well. The combination of his...

    Tactical Boardgame?

Mmm...that's the first strawman argument I've ever read that's made me hungry.

    Tactical Boardgame?

I agree. That's why I called it a tactical wargame earlier in the thread. I don't really see it as much of a boardgame.

    Tactical Boardgame?

Well, that's why we need threads that discuss these issues in depth. I think that the thread on the D&D anime art issue from a couple months back was actually pretty darn interesting and enlightening. Let's talk about what a boardgame is and isn't, what tactical means, and so forth...

    Tactical Boardgame?

Naw, that's not weird at all. I've met plenty of people who have that reaction about various things during my years as a comp instructor. Not usual at all.

    Tactical Boardgame?

Dungeons and Dragons has always been a tactical wargame. That doesn't make it any less of a role-playing game. I do think, however, that 4th edition focuses more on these tactical elements than any other edition. I do find it interesting that none of the reports from D&D Experience that I...

    Tactical Boardgame?

I think that the entire "videogamey" and "anime" arguments were overdone, too. But dismissing a new criticism offhand like this can be just as misguided. It's an easy thing to do, but it can be unfair.

    Tactical Boardgame?

The way you put this last part in quotes makes it seem to me that you really don't think that these people were keeping an open mind at all. Care to clarify?

    Pre-Alpha, really?

I believe that the response that is most appropriate here is an old saying: "The exception proves the rule."

    Chaos and Law are IN!

I don't know. It might send me into messy spasms of nerd rage. ;) Seriously, though, that gnoll better better be carrying at the very least a ballista.... :]

    Chaos and Law are IN!

Wow. There is actually a monster role called "artillery"?!? That sure disrupts my suspension of disbelief.

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

I had a substitute teacher in 6th grade during the unit on Beowulf. She kept calling Grendel an "orgy" instead of an "ogre." This cracked me up to no end. Apparently she didn't know what an orgy was, and I was the only 6th grader in there who did....

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

I see. Why not just focus the discussion on 4th edition rather than assume anything about the other posters that may not be true? Bringing up 3rd edition in this manner seems like something of a strawman and just obfuscates the issue, I think.

When does D&D stop becoming D&D?

I would say that the feel of a game matters a whole heck of a lot, actually.

    Pre-Alpha, really?

Sounds like par for the course as far as WotC and their electronic endeavors go....
