The thing is, I don't think proximity favors the fighter - I think proximity just doesn't favor the wizard as much as distance does. The wizard essentially must die in the first round. If he doesn't, game over for the fighter (unless the dice say otherwise of course). It won't really matter...

I would have to agree. Versatility will win this fight, not initiative, and the fighter unfortunately falls behind the wizard in that regard.
