The fighter and the paladin pretty well ganged up on the knight & stole his stuff

I don't think that the comparisons of 4E to WoW are particularly useful. If you go in specifically looking for things, of course you can find some similarities. 4E will have levels - WoW has levels. 4E will have hit points - WoW has hit points. Et cetera. I think the important question isn't...

The fighter and the paladin pretty well ganged up on the knight & stole his stuff

"Per encounter" casting is nothing like having a mana bar.

New tidbit about spells and hit points.

Exactly. No 20th level barbarian would have a damage output that low. With a 34 STR (when raging) and a +5 greataxe, he's doing 1d12+23 per hit, and that's just bare bones - not even a little bit optimized for damage. Add in weapon enchants (holy, etc.), inherent bonuses to STR, Power Attack...

D&D 4E 4e Special Ability PER Encounter stinks...

Well, the way it's done in SWSE is that the "per encounter" abilities require one minute of uninterrupted rest/recovery before they can be used again. "Per encounter" is just a convenient shorthand, since one full minute of rest is impossible in just about every combat.

??? In my experience around these forums, and in play, 3.X monks are generally regarded as a little on the weak side.

    D&D 4E 1st level 4E characters are already Heroes

And, for me at least, this leads to huge flavor problems. If low level adventurers are so weak, why does anyone ever ask them for help? Why would a small town send a party of four 1st level PCs to deal with that goblin tribe that's been harassing them when a patrol of town guardsmen could handle...

What do you think so far?

You seem to be talking about this playtest example, so I have to ask, how is a fight where two characters get knocked down to negative HP "winning without breaking a sweat?"

    D&D 4E The 'Big 6' in 4e

I don't think magic weapons are ever going to disappear from any edition of D&D. They're just too iconic in fantasy settings. Magic armor will probably stick around, too. But if the +stat items disappeared (along with the mechanics that require high-level PCs to have them), I wouldn't mind one bit.

    D&D 4E The WotC designers will be bashing 4e once 5e is announced . . .

Or, you know, maybe it's because in 2000, 3rd edition had only been out for a few months and nobody had enough experience playing it yet to figure out what the problems were? But I guess it's now fashionable to disparage the motives of people who disagree with you.

Company employees talking up their upcoming products doesn't usually happen in real life? Really?

    D&D 4E The WotC designers will be bashing 4e once 5e is announced . . .

Exaggerate, much? Look, on balance, I think 3.5 is a good ruleset, but there are a lot of things about it I don't like. I don't like the fact that high-level characters are nothing without their gear. I don't like the fact that the multiclassing rules are broken with respect to spellcasters...

And yet, he's proficient in the use of about 40 different weapons, most of which are at least moderately difficult to learn to use effectively. Therefore, he's not a guy who has just learned the basics of fighting. Q.E.D.

    D&D 4E Fun to die in 4e?

Hey, isn't it true that, in 1st edition, you actually gained XP for dying? I think it was 1,000 XP per death.

    Changes to Devils and Demons

The only problem I have with this change is that it sure seems like there are an awful lot of fallen angels around. I think I'd like it a lot better if it were only the original devils who were fallen angels, and most of them were simply created later in that same image. That would make a lot...

Well, that's you bringing your baggage from conversations with other people into conversations with me. I don't appreciate being accused of hypocrisy for no good reason. I have never tried to tell anyone how they should play their game.

    D&D 4E 1st level 4E characters are already Heroes

If you seriously think it's fun to have to sit there and do nothing for an entire combat, or make up a new character before your first one got to do anything it all, well, I strongly suspect that your definition of "fun" is radically different from that of a large majority of gamers. Obviously...

    D&D 4E 1st level 4E characters are already Heroes

This is a straw man argument. No one is saying that danger should be removed from the game. What people are saying is that being knocked out or even killed on the first round of combat before you even have a chance to do anything isn't much fun.

    D&D 4E 1st level 4E characters are already Heroes

Heh. I do get tired of the people claiming that first level characters are fine only talking about fighters and barbarians. Yes, I agree, those classes play just fine at first level. But there are lots of other classes in the game, and several of them have major problems at first level. I'd...
