    D&D 5E (2014) Stat buy-in points

In my old AD&D and 2e games, we used to role for stats, and that lasted into 3e. At some point we went to the buy-in system, mostly because too many people were showing up with old characters that had really great stats. We eventually settled with the standard 20 point buy-in, starting with all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best 5e Character Sheet

Just like every other edition before this one, the best character sheet is a blank sheet of paper.

    D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk?

Bullseye. I never liked settings that were overpopulated, overdeveloped, or had source material that said what was everywhere.

    AD&D level limits question

Neither level limits, nor stat limits, nor racial exclusions.

    Feat Points

I guess it depends what you are trying to accomplish. If you want to accelerate character progress as levels increase, then make higher level feats more powerful. If you want to keep progress at a steady pace, then keep the feats of similar power.

d20 vs. 3d6 "dice heresy" by Chris Sims

No more natural 20s or 1s. This will help you hit if you have less than a 50% chance, and hurt if you have more than a 50% chance. If you really want a steep bell curve, roll 5d4-2.

I need to find a way to charge $6 per month for advertising in my signature line.

Important: Please Read! Changes Are Coming!

The way this works, you use the PayPal ritual and for $6.00 you magically get a month's subscription. Should you change your mind and want your money back, use the Reverse PayPal ritual and you get a $1.20 refund.

How strict are you with the rules when you DM?

Which rules? I add house rules to the game, and they are explained clearly to the players before the game. But we all follow the rules we agree to before the game. Regarding monsters, they are not all clones of each other. I willfully and deliberately modify some of them. That is not cheating...

    Strongholds: Individual or Group Endeavours?

As DM I encouraged the characters to set up holdings and do world-building. Sometimes I would work with players to design something they would want to take and rule over.

    Strongholds: Individual or Group Endeavours?

Generally it takes a very long to build a castle or a city. Most of the time as a player we did as the Necromongers did... we kept what we took. As mid-level characters we did so as a group, not having the power base individually to maintain control. As higher level characters (teens) we could...

    How do you award XP?

    1) Those are minute amounts of experience. 2) That is alot of math. 3) I'd level in mathematician before my characters leveled in their classes.

How do you spice up your "random" encounters?

Boys will be boys. Same here, which was covered in another thread. It is a great feeling when you can add a new power, a new feat, increase skills, and get more Horse Power. That progression should be up to the DM with input from the players. Too often, and it becomes routine. Too infrequent...

    How do you award XP?

How would you assign point value to player enjoyment? How to you award points for characters role playing, shooting the breeze, and plotting and planning? Most systems award alot more points for monster kills than further exploring a dungeon that was just taken, and plotting a way to remodel...

    How do you award XP?

Same here. I found that when points are assigned to tasks, it minimizes role play and other fun things that generally don't deliver alot of points.

How do you spice up your "random" encounters?

Rechan, what I am saying is that almost every encounter is there to further the plot. I try to develop sub-plots around each character, and each encounter ties into the backgrounds of one or more player's character. Sometimes with the first encounter it is not obvious what the focus is, but they...

Justifying adventuring when you're the Boss

This is far from FR canon, just our campaign. When our evil group of six hit epic level each took over a nation or part of one in faerun. We named our evil empire SWAPP, aka the South West Alliance for Peace and Prosperity. With four role playing sessions plus lots of emails on the side we...

How do you spice up your "random" encounters?

Really, I love typing. But I'm also in a sharing mood. What I said is correct, I never generate random encounters. Neither the quantity of encounters, the type of creatures, nor the quantity of creature, As The Shaman said, I generate the encounters before the game starts. But I may alter them...

Where do you see (or want) 5.0 to go?

It should require lots of expensive books, with larger fonts, more pictures, and perhaps some advertising. Content is overrated. The initial investment to play should be about $500, to keep the not-so-serious gamers in older editions.
