"Stumbling Around in My Head" - The Feeling of Dissociation as a Player

And I don't think any of this has any bearing on that feel of [roll = swing]. I guess, maybe if you're someone who knows a lot about melee combat, but it's all about that feeling that when you're rolling the dice, you're actually swinging the sword. Whether this is realistic doesn't matter. I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) What should the skill list look like?

Nevermind, thread moved on while I wasn't looking.

It won't. It won't star any of the SHIELD characters from the movies, except maybe as cameos/recurring. It will focus on low-level SHIELD operatives. Joss Whedon's brother will showrun. Some people have speculated that Item 47 was a backdoor pilot of sorts to the TV show.

D&D 5E (2014) What should the skill list look like?

That's how I treat 4e skills. We've dislodged skills from ability scores. 1. The player describes the action. 2. The DM (that would be me) decides if there's a need for a roll. 3. I call for an ability check. 4. The player chooses a skill to use, unless I veto it.* * I'll usually allow a skill...

"Stumbling Around in My Head" - The Feeling of Dissociation as a Player

Sure, but I don't think that's the point. I believe he's talking of the association in your mind between [ rolling the die = swinging the sword ]. It's that directness between the action in the fiction and the mechanical resolution; that it feels like you're swinging the sword when you're...

D&D 5E (2014) What should the skill list look like?

I've gone back and forth on how I want skills in D&D to be. I slightly prefer the 4e way to the 3e way (mostly because of the binary nature of skill training), but both leave me dissatisfied. I always assumed I'd like broad skills better (because I tend to prefer broad skills), but I've come to...

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

That's how I understood it: The last few episodes have been taking place during this episode.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Design

I do, but I just approximate it depending on how difficult I found the encounter. What do you think would make a good rule, 3-4 'sub-minions' per minion? I have so far only rolled out these sub-minions four times and I don't have a great handle on judging the difficulty yet. The second time I...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Design

I use minions to a) eat up party resources, b) get in the PCs' way and c) let them feel like awesome action heroes. A few sessions ago they mowed through a sea of zombies to get to the necromancer who raised them. They went completely nova and ended up killing nearly 60 of them in four rounds...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Design

Rather than toughening up minions, I made them weaker. I like throwing buttloads of minions at the party, requiring them to hack and slash through swarms of them, but I find the actual swarm rules unsatisfying for hordes of humanoid-ish critters (although I find them fine for swarms of rats or...

D&D 5E (2014) What's the closest system to D&D Next that is currently available?

When I said C&C, it was less because I thought Next was such a huge callback to 1e and more because 'Old School + d20 = C&C'. I could probably have pointed at some other game that does the same (like the now popular DCC), if I had any experience with any of them. If I were to quantify Next more...

    D&D 5E (2014) Powers beget powers.

The Essentials Thief is a beautiful construct, though. Well oiled machine of a class and on the brink of being overpowered.

D&D 5E (2014) What's the closest system to D&D Next that is currently available?

I've only read through the core book once, but Castles & Crusades is a contender, I think. Or if it wasn't for it's lack of levels: Pathfinder Beginner's Box.

    Favorite Doctor from Doctor Who

I love Tom Baker. So much. Both Tennant and Matt Smith give him a run for his money, though. I have a lot of fondness for Hartnell, Troughton, Davison and Eccleston. Especially Troughton, but their order in a list will always vary with my mood or time of day. Pertwee is a special case...

    D&D Settings but not D&D

One of my favorite campaigns ever was a Planescape campaign run in Mage: The Ascension. Fit like a glove. Before 3e came out, we had played D&D-esque fantasy in GURPS for years. We used 2e books as supplements.

    One way to describe D&D...

The Icelandic term for RPGs is "spunaspil" which translates directly to "improv-game". The generic term for a gamemaster is "spunameistari" ("improv-master"), which in a funny twist of fate, has in recent years also been coined as the term for a spin doctor.
