    D&D 5E (2014) I don't understand the reasoning behind D&Dnext

I don't think it's as much as they're going back to 3e as much as if you take 4e and breed it with pre-d20 D&D, it's going to look a lot like 3e.

    Knowledge check pile ons (d20)

I do the same, or have started doing so in 4e. I don't call for knowledge checks. I don't really see the benefit of "If you roll DC Medium, you get information X; if you roll DC Hard, you get X and Y!" If a character has training and inquires, I just tell them.

    What is the Sundering?

Among comic book fandom, this kind of semi-reboot (return to old status quo without retconning it away, but acting like it never happened when moving forward*) is known as a "softboot". The Realms are being softbooted. * See Clone Saga, Emerald Twilight, etc.

Tips For Running The New Giants Adventures

I want to run these, but am worried that it'll take FOREVER. How long would ya'll think it would take to go through them?

    Fiddly Bits: Feet of Movement

Hey, try adding an extra layer of metric conversion on top of the mental gymnastics: Feet? Smorgblargh? GARG! I will, though, generally do fine if it's standardized. So if the numbers are always the same (5 feet, 10 feet, 25 feet, 50 feet) I can easily grid that in my brain (in reach, just out...

    D&D 5E (2014) [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

I don't like the rollback on skills. I was intrigued by the static +5 instead of adding a ability modifier, which they were thinking about there for a while, but now it's basically the same as 3e/4e.

Themes are Dead; long live Specialties

Me too. I realise that not much has changed in the execution since the first package and the new one, and that "specialty" is probably a better term for a feat package than "theme", but I was expecting/hoping that the "themes" would get a bit more, y'know, thematic. Now it just seems weird to...

How often do sex and romance come up in your games?

Sex occassionally happens in a 'wink, wink, knowwhatyamean', but only off screen. Romance hasn't happened in any game of mine since before any of us got to experience the real thing. Soon as the romance stopped being fantasy in itself, it stopped showing up in games. Before that it happened but...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons: "There's a "Mod" for that!

As far as I can tell, OD&D has two (most common, anyway) definitions: Meaning either the original '74 set or just anything older than AD&D*. (* Which was how I commonly remember it being referred to as before my multi-year D&D/ENW hiatus.)

People you like that you've never met

Like like how? Because there's the "I'm very much a fan of whatever that guy's doing (but might not actually see myself personally liking the person)" and "There's this guy out there in the ether that I think I'd enjoy the company of". The first category having, for example, Steve Jobs, while...

    Easy Terrain

Would double speed for easy terrain be problematic? I've done that. Battle took place in a giant bowl: difficult terrain upwards, normal to the sides and the option of double speed downwards, but then you needed to do a DEX save or tumble down the slope.

Yeah, it's a fine replacement, but I'm a bit sad Mads Mikkelsen had to back out.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e/Next Cosmology

Few thoughts: The idea of a proper planar toolkit is neat. I like toolkits. I like the Great Wheel (huge PS fan). I also like 4e's cosmology. I use bits and pieces from both in my game. In general, I find 4e's cosmos better as an attachment to a normal fantasy campaign, but the Great Wheel as...

I just chewed out my players

Yeah, that's pretty much the same as with us, except it's fridays. We have a core group of three that are committed and then three more players who show up every few game nights. But they have to live with being supporting cast to the core three, so to speak.

I go away, and I miss a whole edition - Help?!

To me, this seems like a question best answered with the answers to a couple of different questions: "How much disposable income do you have?" and "Do you enjoy buying/owning/reading RPG books for their own sake?" I'll counter all those who say 4e is super-duper completely different from...

D&D 5E (2014) And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

Yes, but the die pool that's being discussed isn't just extra damage; it's bonus dice that you can choose to add to a variety of things, like To Hit, AC, or damage. Context of the thread's discussion and the mechanic being put forth in the article. If the die size was based on weapon damage...

D&D 5E (2014) And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

While I'm a big fan of 4e's [W] mechanic, wouldn't that make high damage weapons way too powerful? Making the greatsword super accurate and pretty much work as shield?

D&D 5E (2014) And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

Yeah, this seems like a non-issue to me. Use dice if your prefer, or use static modifiers if you like that better. From my experiences from converting modifiers to dice, it's probably better to start with the assumption of dice, because of the random factor. I think it's easier to non-randomize...
