    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Hey, I ran a short campaign using S&W inbetween 4e and 5e and I enjoyed it very much!

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

I prefer higher level play. Or rather, I prefer higher-PC-power play. 5-15 is probably what I'd have preferred in 3e, but I just found everything too cumbersome to bother past 10th (and it was already shaky at that point). Maybe it was better in 3.5, I don't know, we never switched. There's...

D&D General How old are you?

I'm 35, started playing in '94 at age 9 via the RC as run by my best friend's older brother.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

I've read it as a curiosity, but I've never played for the same reasons as Jester above.

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

The RC was my very first love. My best friend's older brother ran a game of it for us when I was 9 years old and he spent the entire time trying nothing but humiliate us but immediately fell in love with it and have been since. I ate that book up, soaking up every last detail. Still load up the...

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

My RPGing started with BECMI but I was so young that I didn't really understand the rules. I got the 2e core books but I just found them impenetrable. At the same time I tried various other rpgs which all had simple to understand and straightforward mechanics, so that's where I gravitated. But...

    How serious is your d&d?

I generally run somewhat zany games. Someone said Discworldy and that seems apt. I always strive for a consistent world stage, but it definitely leans closer to Sir Terry than Tolkien. Not that we don't have our big dramatic moments, the jokes are funnier with proper heft, coming from well...

Give Me Your Dragon Heist Tips

I really like this! Planescape had something like this via the Sensorites, a opium den of memories, or at least Torment did.

How often do your players multiclass?

I have not seen a multiclassed character since 3e.

Hit dice used in ways other than to bolster hit points

We did stuff like this some in our 4e campaign, used surges for a lot of stuff. Mostly as an exhaustion stand-in. Fail a save, fail a skill challenge, lose a surge, kind of thing. I also remember a set of magic items that were fuelled by life energy, in the form of surges. The details have...

Am I alone in hating Christmas-themed adventures?

I'm fond of them in theory. I've done two that I can remember, and one worked out quite well and the other was a terrible bore. The difference is mainly that in in the former it was a simple affair —hoho, hehe, wink, wink— while in the latter one I overthought it and it the merry overstayed it's...

    Initiative Reboot [homebrew]

I’ve been considering a similar Greyhawk initiative derivative for my upcoming campaign. We’ve been using side initative for years, but I’m looking for a different feel for our next game. You only ever roll one die, if you perform more than one action, you use the highest die. In general...

    Generic Bonus Actions and Reactions

The problem was, and I get that this is not a problem for everyone, is that too many people would feel the need to --do something-- to maximize their output, and that if they didn't they'd be underutilizing their turn. This is where they can bog down play. To me, personally, bonus actions...

    Generic Bonus Actions and Reactions

Interesting concept, some kinda minor action in a sense.[emoji848] But in all seriousness, no I do not miss minor actions at all. Needless complication that bogs down game play. Heck, the concept of bonus actions only exists to limit the volume of extra stuff you can do in a turn.

House rule for Going below 0 hp and get up again with a good berry or a healing

I can confidently say that my house rules did not increase rests in our games. Or lessen them. Or impact them in any way. YMMV, of course, if you find that to be a problem in your games. In general, I've never found short rests to be a problem at all, since they will only happen at natural...

House rule for Going below 0 hp and get up again with a good berry or a healing

It's a change in dynamics, but these two rules were not adopted at the same time: The first time we used a variant of the "skull marks/countdown to doom" rule was in 4e. I don't remember what the details were, but it did get reintroduced fairly early into our 5e game. The whack-a-mole aspect was...

House rule for Going below 0 hp and get up again with a good berry or a healing

More apt to attack, yes. Although how I narrate the KO moment varies, so sometimes PCs do end up prone (it's "not automatically" prone) or momentarily knocked out, just depending on what makes sense/inspiration in the moment. More deaths, not noticeably. But in theory, probably. I've never...

House rule for Going below 0 hp and get up again with a good berry or a healing

The up-down-up-down effect isn't as jarring with the reframing of the narrative, more like dramatic beats, and retaining the death save fails (or "skull marks") creates real consequences and increases tensions, without starting a death spiral.
  20. Viking Bastard

House rule for Going below 0 hp and get up again with a good berry or a healing

I do two things: • I changed the narrative around the Unconscious condition (and call it KO) so that the PCs aren't actually unconscious, as much as they are just out of play while they pull themselves together. Mechanically the only difference is that they aren't automatically prone and they...
