If they're serious about "flatter math," then WotC needs to deal with ability scores.

For my own 2 cents. I think the objective of flatter probability growth is the single most exciting innovation announced for 5e. I havent as of yet panicked about the stats as they stand as if I was to compare best-to-worst and see a 25% variation, that (to me) a pretty small variance. Maybe...

D&D 5E (2014) A Modest Proposal to Unify the Fanbase without D&D Next

Piping in late my issue with your position is... Well, for a while now (decades really) I have been looking at D&D and I came to a number of core conclussions about it. Things I just didnt like. I look at all the editions and think "Nah, aspect A bugged me" and another edition and think "aspect...

Ability Score Capping... with added Sanity.

Pretty much what I have thought they should do as soon as I heard about ability score capping

D&D 5E (2014) Concept of Perfect Imbalance for DndNext Game Design

In a DM+Players setup I think balance is important. More recently though I have come to the conclussion that its not the most important facet of play and it is possible to sacrifice good game elements to achieve it, and I just dont want any 5e design to go into that trap. FWIW the video was...

    Automatic success for every class

One of the other things I dont like about rolling is that the number or rolls involved in resolution can be hard to nail down. For instance, when I snuck up on that goblin, I had to approach the goblin camp and get in position to sneak attack him. Now, was that 2 stealth rolls or one. Some DM's...

Just add a milestone mechanic module

Different debate for a different thread (and there is already multiple of them out there, most of which I have posted in). This thread pertains to mechanical solutions. CM had a good mechanical suggestion and I acknowledged it. My disclaimer of propensity for organic solutions over mechanical...

Just add a milestone mechanic module

We now have 4 or 5 thread independently discussing this point. This has got to be the most interesting mechanical solution I have found*. Whilst there is the carrot on the stick to move forward (i.e. getting your dailies) is there equal motivation to rest? I am guessing (given this was for a 4e...

What to do about the 15-minute work day?

Pretty much. The 15 minute day only occurs in a static world. Thats just a bad habbit DM's get into. Get in the habbit of making sure your creatures arent just target dummy's waiting for the party to come and shoot them and the 15 minute day stops happening.

Idea for DC Based Arcane Casting

I do like this approach. I especially like the way that DCC has you lose the spell if you fail (thus complying with the old school reason for re-memorizing spells at end of day) and more dire consequence for a colossal failure, with a particular LOVE of permanent cosmetic mutation (oops, just...

    Automatic success for every class

If you get a chance, have a look at the MythAndMagic (a 2e retroclone) take on NWP. I actually really liked it. It had automatic success by proficiency level against relative difficulty of task. So a theif could auto-climb an easy wall, whereas an epic theif could auto-climb just about anything...

D&D 5E (2014) Play Styles and DnD Next

I dont know if I can claim it to be "my style", but I do knowwhat I want it to be my style by the time 5e comes around. I want to design more losely and let the players finish the job. I want to, as part of adventure design, define things as a simple framework and let players dictate what...

Here, Let Me Fix "Powers Per Day" For You

Thanks for responding. This is a bit clearer what your original point is. It seems I may have offended you somehow to get this response and if I did, Im sorry, I didnt mean to, I was just trying to contribute in a positive manner. Thanks for letting me know know that I need to work on my...

    Automatic success for every class

Propose the same thing 5 years ago I would have told you your crazy. Ask me today, and I completely agree. Rolling a dice and probability of success is a good way of quantifying capability, but increasingly I have found that qualifying capability is more conducive to ease and flow of play...

Here, Let Me Fix "Powers Per Day" For You

This is a good point. After Cadfan's curiously aggressive response, this is a good way to look at it. Its not "artificial" that the party was "jumped" by wandering monsters when they were sleeping. Frankly, they made so much damn noise in the last fight that they attracted scouts from another...

    Ditch Weapon And Armor Lists

Im all for that. This thread evolved from standardizing damage to the fighter core competence, but its an interesting evolution. We spend so much forum space on just what the fighter is, and this has opened an interesting avenue. If weapons were truely unique (rather than just a collection of...

Encounter-based Design: The only smart elephant in the room

Sort of. Even though players were pushing for the 15 minute day, no-one sort of liked that it was happening, it was too much white-washing encounters. Lets just say we put motivations to NOT rest after every fight. Not so much mechanical, just a reward structure. In and of itself it didnt...

Encounter-based Design: The only smart elephant in the room

I give genuine feedback about the experience my group had and this is your response... Do you do that alot. Get genuine feedback from people, and because you dont agree with it attempt to assassinate them or their position in some way? How is that working out for you?

Here, Let Me Fix "Powers Per Day" For You

Yea, Im with you on this. I think this whole "15-minute day problem" is a storm in a teacup as generally ground rules established within the group have prevented it being a problem.

    Ditch Weapon And Armor Lists

Yes, that is a danger. Interestingly though, mechanical differentiation is probably more of an important feature for players that monsters. To know that my mace gets a bonus vs certain armors make it cool and unique to me as a player. As a DM, do I need to play there special rules for my...

    Ditch Weapon And Armor Lists

Its true, there was good reason to have a shield on the ancient battlefield. But as much as that is true if you make shield too good then everyone ends up using them and there ends up being no point in having 2-handed weapons, which becomes a "numeric pigeon-holing" effect. I want that when...
