    Suggestions for a templated roper

And what is the point of this nonsensical spam in all the recent threads?

Mules! -- Huh! -- What are they good for?

This is certainly something to mule over.

Classical Tales of Deals with the Devil

In the classic theme, Balzac's Peau de chagrin is a great read too, though the Faustian devil here is quite unusual.

    The Opposite of Railroading...

Not necessarily. Actual railroads have switchers/shunters. :) But you stay on one set of tracks, even if they have branchs. Railroading is DMing like a computer or a gamebook, even if you have multiple path there is no room left for the players to do things that haven't been thought of in advance.

Mules! -- Huh! -- What are they good for?

The encumberance rules are forgiving enough to make mules useless, especially once bags of holding (or rather, handy haversacks) are available. And given the very abstract nature of the hit point system and the fact that a puny but mid-level elf warlock can survive crushing blows that an...

Let me know the result of your cogitations. Not in this thread, but in the ICC for example. :D

    Beauty and the D&D Geek!

There's a certain famous person, whose exact identity and position I can't talk about because it could result in a Grandma-upsetting tangent, who claimed that all the books he ever read could fit in his car's glove compartment. Now, this was quite obviously a lie, as I don't believe it would be...

Wonder what this means for parodic works, such as Spinrad's Iron Dreams. Or satirical pieces like Swift's ultra-classic Modest Proposal.

    Beauty and the D&D Geek!

I think you find it worse than what they use for the girls because it's a stereotype that targets you. I'll take the pic on this blog post showing the various entrants in the Eurovision song contest. I found the worst stereotype here was that of France, but I suppose an Irish or Englishman would...

'Cause it is? Lit 101: fictional characters are not persons (even when they are based on real persons), they are literary devices used by the author to convey something, a message or an emotion.

Game Hybrids That Should Not Be

Bunnies & 'Berron -- play rabbits in a land of sentient golems, magic trains, and dragon illuminati. Advanced Masquerade Leader -- tactical warfare with one cardinal rule: no witness & no evidence. And, of course, Grand Theft Mario Kart.

Personally, I dislike the "undead are evil, so good or neutral undead have to be a new creature type" approach that led to the Eberron deathless. (The BOED deathless are slightly different conceptually.)

    Spelljammer...just wow

For example, the FR gnomes have not been changed from shy and reclusive illusion specialists ("The Forgotten Folk of the Forgotten Realms") to a bunch of Dragonlance-style Tinkers. The mechanics-focused country of the Realms, Lantan, has not been retconned from an exotic human nation to the...

OOTS 450 - Wands are for Suckers

So, I see my proposal to all OOTS thread starters to host a copy of the strip on imageshack hasn't been heard. It would be nice to be able to read the strip on the same day the thread appears...

    Spelljammer...just wow

Of course it's TSR's fault if gamers want that. Of course. That's because TSR released Spelljammer, Dark Sun, Oriental Adventures and Al Qadim that these have become niche products. That's because nothing say "European-flavored fantasy" like Beholders and Sahuagins and Rust Monsters and...

To me, that's the "must be paladin" requirement, not the "must die in the throne room" requirement.

Soon died in the throne room of Azure City? Further, I do not see the dwarf-like guy with the horned helmet among the paladins that were guarding the throne room in the previous strips. No, I think it's more probable that it's actually the ghosts of every deceased SG paladin. I don't think the...

Mage armor is an oddball, in that it's not a real armor but a force field. That and shield are the only protective force effects I know off that aren't deflection. So, yeah, if you want to be very strict and rule-lawyery, incorporeal attacks shouldn't be called "touch attack". But it's kinda...

    OotS 449

Ah, incorporeality and Strength... The thing is that a creature with the incorporeal subtype may keep a Strength score if it's able to become corporeal, because then it uses it in these cases. Everytime it's not corporeal, however, it has no Str score. The thing is, that factoid is detailed...
