    D&D 3.x 3.5 Point Buy

Well, as long as it was fun, I suppose I can refrain from pointing out that I noted there was a minimum point cost of 1. :)

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Point Buy

For future reference, I've noticed that the number of points required to raise a stat is equal to the stat's current modifier, with a minimum of one point. So raising a stat from 13 to 14 (+1 modifier at 13) would cost one point, but 14 to 15 would cost 2 (as 14 yields a +2 modifier). I find...

Does being raised affect a wizard's spell aquisition?

That's the reasoning I was running with originally, but couldn't find rules to support it. The problem with the "fighters don't keep the bonus feat" line of reasoning, though, is that it's not directly applicable. Fighter feats aren't inscribed in a tome somewhere for future reference, whereas...

Does being raised affect a wizard's spell aquisition?

Hi, all. My wizzie ended up getting dead last week; the current plan is to keep him Gentle Reposed until we can get back to town. The raising should drop him back from 9th to 8th level, which brings me to my question. When he levels back up to 9th, do I again get to pick two spells of levels...

    LOST Wednesday 11/16/05 {Spoilers for this ep and previous eps ONLY!}

I suspect he was keeping time on the stick, that he may have an accurate count of when 40 days had passed.

    Quirky Food Habits

I have a few habits that people seem to find strange. First, I take my grilled cheese sandwiches with mustard. Yellow mustard, I have found, is the only variety that works properly with the sandwiches. Probably a good tablespoon or so on each slice of bread, between the bread and that slice's...

Help! Urgent science question I need answered!

I suppose your party mage could get cute with some manner of Reverse Gravity item that projects its field at an adjustable angle; that would solve both the "get the thing off the ground" and the "move it forward" problem, plus lead to some interesting oscillations. Also, when it came time to...

    Use magic device and scrolls

It should be noted that there would be two spells for which he would need to emulate the Intelligence: Mordenkainen's Lucubration and Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer. Both spells are listed as "Wizard only."

    Table rules and conventions

You might also want to make an exception to this for spells and effects like Rary's Telepathic Bond that allow for telepathic communication. Such exchanges do take place at the speed of thought, after all. :)

    Dispell Magic and Shatter

I've often contemplated trying to get this combo to work in a reasonable manner, largely without success. Too chancy, IMO. I toss the Dispel; it might stick, it might not. Assuming it sticks, I toss the Shatter; again, might work, might not. If so, I have the dubious benefit of destroying an...

    Random Encounters

I'm afraid this must be done. I refer you to the Order of the Stick for the defining work of Random Monster Theory. http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=145 :)

Time Stop + Delayed Blast Fireball - Timing?

I don't personally see a problem with saying "I set the timer such that it goes off on inititative tick X on round Y" (where Y <= 5).

Two questions about character death and magic items

I concur. He's an unattended object upon death, and if nobody is carrying or otherwise attending him, his corpse gets no save or SR against the fireball, and neither do his nonmagical items and/or cash. Time to look into True Resurrection, I'd think.

Help wanted: Spellcaster Tactics (my players -- out!)

Well, there aren't a whole lot of good necromancer prestiege classes. Maybe Pale Master, but I recall that one to have less than full caster progression. Since you're playing in the Realms, Red Wizard is always a reasonable choice. You mention that Illusion is his banned school. Remember...

Help wanted: Spellcaster Tactics (my players -- out!)

True enough, but using death magic removes the possibility of bringing the character back with Raise Dead. A cleric of that level probably has Raise Dead on hand, just in case, but is less likely to have Resurrection's material components kicking around, thus forcing them to choose between...

Help wanted: Spellcaster Tactics (my players -- out!)

He might also want to invest in a Ring of Counterspells with Dimensional Anchor stored in it. Little is more irksome than being unable to teleport to safety, once you've gotten used to so doing.

Help wanted: Spellcaster Tactics (my players -- out!)

I'm presuming this is the standard "PCs walk into the foe's lair" type encounter. Well, as with any wizard against a group close to his level, if they meet face-to-face, he's dead. Thus, he'll probably want to employ some manner of hit-and-run tactics, of nasty sort. For example, as he has...

Well, I suppose that's what I get for not wishing to wake my wife while rummaging through my bookshelf for Vampire 1e. :) I KNEW I saw that explaination somewhere...

New World of Darkness core book free on DTRPG!

I can see where you're coming from, and don't have a real good answer for you. I think the reason is probably something along the lines of "It was different from everything else out there when we created Vampire!", which was subsequently rationalized away with the "film rating" explaination I...
