Gaming with friends, jerks, and reactions

I usually game with friends, and we usually do stuff beyond the gaming table. I've only gamed at conventions a couple times--both, I felt, where fun experiences, but its nothing like gaming with friends. I've had my fair share of gaming with jerks over my 20 years of being in the hobby. (Heck...

Are you in the RPG closet?

Using the theories by a guy named Jurgen Habermas... Normal is what is acceptable in the public sphere and requires no further explanation in a discussion. At least in the United States, most normal and acceptable social activities have some kind of public sphere component. For example...

Thunder Rift modules: What are they like?

The Quest for the Silver Sword is kind of a neat module where the characters explore a dead wizard's keep to break a strange curse that has brought winter to the nearby village. Lot's of neat encounters with an assortment of monsters. I do, however, have a big problem with the ending... SPOILER...

    My love letter to WotC

Dear WotC, It's been a great 12-13 years. But now I want a divorce... ---- Something like that?

    WotC: Re-issue older editions.

Maybe when the 4e cycle winds down WotC should just start all over with D&D, zero-hour everything, reset, and start anew with another 40 year cycle of D&D starting with a little brown box that's supposed to be a supplement for a miniature wargame... :hmm:

What kind of print products would want WotC to produce?

My homebrew campaign setting in print as the standard campaign setting for 5e!

The fragmentation of the D&D community... was it inevitable?

The D&D community has always been splintered, right from 1974. I doubt Gygax and Arneson saw completely eye-to-eye (but that's neither here nor there). But the rules were open to interpretation. Each referee/DM had, and still has his or her own style of play. Each player has his or her own...

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

Did any module, after the Fiend Folio came out, had the players encounter the Flumph? Here's a better question: would the author of said module admit using the flumph in a published format? :p

Ok, now i'm REALLY CONFUSED. AKA, do any of you think you know what WotC is doing?

WotC is trying to make money from the D&D brand. (well duh) Actually, I have no idea what WotC is up to. And frankly, I'm not sure if want to know. Perhaps we're all better off not knowing. I mean, seriously, why speculate? I've got to prep for my next game.

    Edition Fatigue

For me, edition fatigue sets in when I'm moving to a new place and have to carry all of my boxes of gaming books from each edition of D&D. ;)

    Is it time for 5E?

No. It's time for 7e. Let's just skip a couple of editions and get to lucky number 7. :)

Borders trouble, could lead to BIG TROUBLE!

So Sears, Kmart, Borders, and Waldenbooks are all part of the same inbred corporation? Oh good lord.

Flumphs. Flumphs hate nymphs because nymphs overturn flumphs and then run away laughing...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

WotC's recent insanity... hmmm... Who says WotC's actions have to make sense to any of us? Certainly, a lot of aging gamers are no longer part of WotC's target demographic, but does that really mean WotC is insane? Somebody else brought up a link about Games Workshop's business practices. GW...

    Is D&D stifling your creativity?

I realized something: this thread touches upon the Great Paradox of RPG rules. Rules Lite RPG = "There's not enough rules/options for everything!" Rules heavy RPG = "AH! My creativity is constrained!" And so the cycle continues...

    Is D&D (WotC) flaming out?

A little bit of column A, a little bit of column B. I, too, have noticed the acceleration of the production cycle: More splatbooks in less time, a new version ("essentials") released at a record speed, etc. But, I lean toward grognard. Let's face it: WotC did not target 4e toward older...

    Is D&D stifling your creativity?

I felt constrained by 4e, which is one main reason I don't play it. Creating stat blocks for high level 3.5e main NPCs can certainly be a chore. My problem is that I like trying out all the options available for 3.5e. I feel like I haven't explored that system thoroughly enough. I would like...
