    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

I agree at least partially. I think, the 4e design as far as one can tell from the pieces presented is not "well" according to GNS yet is will be successful yet again... If I accept the terminology of GNS (for now) than there are elements of all creative agendas in 4e - gamist (for sure, very...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo Annoucement!

I've checked the alpha version. It looks interesting, some inspiration for SW saga, maybe... Anyway, I will still buy 4e. Unless it is really bad product (which I doubt) I will play 4e and in the time Pathfinder RPG will be finished I will be deep in 4e teritorry. I might buy Pathfinder RPG...

smathis: You man, are really great. The analysis is perfect and well served. Well done!

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

GNS is inherently problematic theory, which has hard time if applied to D&D (any edition). That is well known truth due to the great DIY character of the game. One can play it in almost any approach from very "gamist" to very "simulationist" or even "narrativist" one. For the sake of sanity I...

    Gleemax is 10% useful=90% useless

Gleemax is a mess. It has no conception, I can't find anything and it runs with strange sort of occassional errors of redirection in my favourite browser (read: Opera). The boards itself are quite OK, they are boards after all, so the only problem is the fact that there is too much to digest...

If 4th Edition didn't use the "D&D" moniker...

Yes. There are some RPGs that I am willing to buy without hesitation and if all the other things would be equal (WotC producing the game, same team of designers etc.) I would belive them enough to buy it blindly and immediately. As I did in other occassions with other games where the quality of...

    D&D 4E 4e: the new paradigm

I don't accept GNS as a valid approach to game analysis. That said I see a serious shift in paradigm to more balanced game from let's say diversified interaction. I am not sure how that will impact my gaming, cause I usually play the game more to my own ideas and not always exactly as the rules...

D&D 4E What will be your first 4E character?

I've used to play human rogue/bard with archery expertise and I want to see how this concept works in 4e. Although I thing this time I will build the character from ranger class with training in some rogue abilities. But it is hard to tell... It will be still human though.

    Balance vs. Diversity

Stalker0 I agree fully. See my edit in the first post. The crucial point is how cruical skills prove to be. If skills are important enough the variety will be big. If they turn out to be inferior as well... well, that would be bad.

    Balance vs. Diversity

Because such character offers interesting story and role opportunities. Take Rincewind from novels by Terry Pratchett. It is absolutely incompetent wizard, yet he is main hero there. So if for whatever reason player want to play Rincewind, should I say... no this game can not offer you this, you...

    Balance vs. Diversity

Hong: Yeah. I currently suppose I will need to make some house-rules to the system to make it work for my needs better (all skills optional, maybe some tweaking to the marking/action points...). This might very well be one of those house-rules... Well, I hard to tell exactly, till the rules...

    Balance vs. Diversity

Ok. Now, it would suit me better if there would be some ties between those two, you know. But I guess our preference is different, so that's ok.

    Yes. But shouldn't it be?

    Balance vs. Diversity

I think, that this brings us to two questions. 1) If the abilities play smaller role (as it seems they do), do we need them, anymore? Or are they just sacred cow which was not slaugtered this time? 2) Is player's decision reflected in the outcome? Especially if he decides to create sub-optimal...

Analysis of Initial release of PCs

You know... try this: AC - light armor is Int mod or Dex mod (whatver is higher) + Armor bonus (light armor is cloth, leather, hide) AC - heavy armor is just Armor bonus (with no ability mod) (heavy armor is chain, scale, plate) Ref. is modified with either Int of Dex (whatever is higher)...

Jason Bulmahn Speaks about DDXP(His take on the system)

Few days ago I've posted a thread asking if the cost payed for balance isn't diversity. This review seems to support my worst worries...

Trimming the Fat: Three Ability Scores

I've already write in thread balance vs. diversity, that those six scores are not needed anymore. And I still think it is true...

    Balance vs. Diversity

That would be viable argument if the abilities would play a significant role. The problem is, they don't. Their effect is dwindling, because they are pretty much interchangeable. I can indeed create dexterous wizard or intelligent one or strong one for that matter... the problem is, the outcome...

    Balance vs. Diversity

Li Shenron: Yeah. I really agree with that one. I think we are loosing a bit of diversity, I am not sure how much. Maybe it wouldn't be as much as it seems. The diversity of switch is important but will eventually fade away. I know why people wellcome balance, I see this issue severe as well, I...
