"Swords are no more use here"

Other ideas: Incorporeal undead (50% miss chance even with a magic weapon). Some also possess really nasty abilities, such as strength drain and level drain. Ethereal creatures that pop in, make a quick attack on a single party member, pop out. This will put a premium on ranged attacks...

"Swords are no more use here"

Try a few oozes. Gray ooze and black pudding can destroy a weapon that hits it. Black pudding and ochre Jelly are immune to slashing and piercing damage. Personally, I'd be tempted to create a variation of the gel cube also. The idea that a sword can kill a lump of acidic gel makes little...

Your opinion about very small PDFs

Good point. I'm a big fan of the City Guide pdf's, and being able to print just the single location I'm using in a game session is a benefit over thumbing through an entire print book. It just depends on how I'll use the material. //slight hijack// That's the sole reason I haven't purchased...

    So we're expecting a baby...

Absolutely. Encourage her to explore the world about her. If that includes gaming, great. If it doesn't, that's ok too. Look on the bright side: either she'll be a gamer, or a babysitter for everyone else's kids!

Your opinion about very small PDFs

I generally prefer small to mid-size pdf's simply because printing a large pdf can be a pain and not terribly cost effective. If I really want a large pdf, I'll try to find it in print. That said, there is one type of small pdf I never buy - the "single item" pdf. A single class. A single...

Real tale of Old School feel?

Ok, that makes sense to me. Still, depending on how the consumer is going to use the module, the amount of detail will be a strength or a weakness. Yeah, I don't mind a review pointing out any mistakes, but I think we've gone overboard in expecting all the crunch to be perfect, even if it has...

    Official Nostalgia Thread (thread necromancy)

    76. Any problem could be solved by killing the monster and taking its stuff. No negotiating. No politics. No guilt.

Real tale of Old School feel?

I'll disagree to the extent of saying that some modules are well-organized, allowing the GM to find the relevant info when needed. Others are incredibly disorganized, requiring a considerable amount of pre-game work from the GM to make it easily usable. Organization falls under the goal of...

Real tale of Old School feel?

I like this list. It allows for a wide range of preferences, while making explicit some the unspoken expectations the average consumer has when purchasing a module.

How do you use cliches in your game?

I like to use cliches for the elements of the world that the characters should already know about. As an example, if I call something a halfling, it's pretty close to the stereotypical halfling. If I create an evil, cannibalistic, demon-worshipping, worg-riding halfling race, I'll call it...

Real tale of Old School feel?

Any objections if we stop worrying about motives, agendas, and all that stuff and just focus on the more interesting (if less flameworthy) comments in this thread? Just a crazy thought... :p I'm going to try to put Quas's objections (as I understand them) in a framework that might make some...

    Concerning Hit Points/ Hit Die

Our group awards HD/2 + 1 for every level after first. D4 = 3 D6 = 4 D8 = 5 D10 = 6 D12 = 7 This gives the characters a minor boost over average (an extra 1/2 hit point per level), but completely avoids the issue of two similar characters having significantly different HP totals.

    Official Nostalgia Thread (thread necromancy)

More seriously, yeah pubescent teenage guys really weren't the best folks for the ladies to hang out with. But that would have been true whether playing D&D, going to a movie, watching tv, or whatever. Thank goodness most of us outgrow that stage.

Excuse me, but this is a rose-colored glasses zone. For reality, take the first door on your left. :)

Real tale of Old School feel?

Agreed. That said, I see two issues a GM has to consider in this regard. One, the game still has to be fun. The example of drinking the brandy, failing a save, and losing the character is an example of "un-fun", IMO. There was too little information available to the characters to make a...

    D&D 4E 4E conversations

I can see your reasoning, but then a whole lot of threads could fall into this category. Do we ban them all? Who decides? I much prefer the relatively clear yet broad limitations we currently have (no politics, no bad language, etc).

    Help with an Adventure Idea

Did you ever see the first season episodes (6 & 7) in Alias where Sydney goes undercover in a Romanian (Bulgarian?) insane asylum to get info from one of the inmates? That might fit quite well with what you have in mind. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend renting it. Here's a brief synopsis...

How do I make Necro =/= Evil ?

So instead of "Buy American" we have bumper stickers that say "Animate American"... (Apologies to the mods if this strayed over any lines)

Real tale of Old School feel?

Just to be fair, I hope you can admit that this particular module requires a LOT of forbearance by the players to be taken seriously. Doesn't mean it can't be fun, just that it's sillier than most old school modules. You make a good point about how all playing groups have to meet the GM...

    [Theory] Why D&D is Popular

I think so, for a couple reasons. One, D&D wasn't just the first major RPG system, it was practically universal in its day. No matter what other system someone played, it was likely that they had played D&D also. And virtually everyone playing RPG's knew someone playing D&D. Two, as has been...
