    George R.R. Martin novel news

Defecation is a part of life. I don't want explicit defecation scenes in my books. The miracle of birth is a part of life. I don't want explicit birth scenes in my books. There's a big difference between a book having "adult" material and having "mature" material. IMO, too much of Martin's...

    Prerequisites for Multiclassing

Well, first off there are two reasons why this might be a problem. One is that the rules may make certain combinations much more effective/powerful than others. Certain prestige classes clearly fall into this category. That's why it's perfectly acceptable for GM's to limit some character options...

    Prerequisites for Multiclassing

Since no one else has, I'll present an argument against this system. The D&D class system is intended to represent the very things you are trying to impose on characters *before* they acquire the class in question. IOW, if my concept is a thug, I might design him as a fighter with a couple...

    "Simplified Player's Handbook"

Take a look at OGL Fantasy Lite by S.T. Cooley, available on RPG Now. IIRC, he's also working on a supplement with monsters and magic items, which should be available shortly. http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=2748&

Why I don't write FRP articles any more

Depends on one's definition of success. I would guess that less than 1% of those who have tried to sell d20 material professionally are in a position to quit their day jobs and do so. And that doesn't count all the folks producing material for no cost. The major element to me is that we don't...

Monster Tactics against PCs - How have you misplayed them?

Interesting. My group had a similar encounter. The GM threw a dozen worgs at us. After we'd killed about half, he threw a frost worm at us. By the time we killed it, everyone was injured and most characters blew their saves. Result: TPK. I think if the GM had realized how deadly the worm would...

What appeals to you in a fantasy novel?

Not sure if this helps with your question, but the number one thing I remember in books I enjoy are the characters. Interesting, likeable characters are always good. Interesting, hate-able villains are even better. Anti-heroes are very hard to pull off, as they often end up as simply obnoxious...

    Favored Class alternative

You're right, of course. But I should be excused for forgetting this, as no player in his right mind would ever reach -40% or higher. Then again, there are a lot of players not in their right minds, so...never mind. :)

    PDF Product Ideas

Take a look at this thread. If you can add this kind of detail to the creatures you create, you'll have a pretty good hook for selling. http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=136488 There's some especially great stuff by Celebrim and kigmatzomat.

    is there a market?

There was a thread on this topic (what do we want in a campaign world book) quite a while back - maybe someone can search the boards and find it for you. In the meantime, I'll give you my own response - just keep in mind that I'm probably not your target audience. I always homebrew, so I use...

Civ 4 - Excited? [UPDATED pt.2 - Game is out & now PATCHED! Share your thoughts.]

I miss using caravans to stockpile production when I didn't have anything good to produce. Made completing Wonders so much easier, and you never knew when there would be a need for some quick military units. (Though using caravans for units resulted in a 50% loss, IIRC)

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

You’re right, and I think this was what Ryan was referring to above. My point is that distributing new rules to designers is a means, not an end. The end has to be improving the gaming experience of actual players. If the new rules don't affect gamers, what's the point? Assume WOTC begins to...

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

I disagree. The SRD has been available since soon after the 3.0 books were first released, but WOTC has sold hundreds of thousands (millions?) of core books in past few years. Like it not, most gamers seem unwilling to use an online/digital rules source for this game. Personally, I like having...

Interesting Ryan Dancey comment on "lite" RPGs

While it's nice that only designers need to see the (presumably superior) new rules, they still need a mechanism for disseminating those rules to the gaming community in coherent form. Publishing new editions on a regular basis will meet considerable resistance, especially if the new rules...

    Favorite Casting?

Almost always a spellcaster. I know the system better than some of the other players, so I tend to take the more complicated character. I also tend to play clerics, as most players don't want to. The more I think about it, I'm really in the mood to play a brick in Champions and just go knock...

    Flaming whip

Yeah, no offense to anyone intended, but this thread reminds why I've stopped taking the rules so seriously. I'm trying to play a game, not do my taxes. :p

Sorry - I think the point was missed...

Agreed. In fact, I don't mean that they should know magic item and creature descriptions, just the rules of gameplay. Hiding the actual game rules from players can cause a couple problems, IMO. First, many players also GM, so the idea that players shouldn't know all the rules isn't workable...

Looking for advice from parents: Gaming with baby

I have to admit, this is what happened with me. I don't have children, but at one point was gaming with two couples who both had young children. A 4-hour game session would consist of maybe 20 minutes of gameplay with everyone involved - the rest of the time was one interruption after another...
