In Praise of Stuff that Doesn't Get Praised Enough

Rolling a '1'. It rarely receives praise, in fact just the opposite. But that humble little '1' reminds you that no matter how powerful you are, sometimes things won't go the way you've planned. I couldn't possibly count the number of plots that have emerged from someone rolling a '1' at just...

I'll never live long enough to experience all of 4e

Classes, feats, spells and monsters are all pretty good. I think people are more worried about published adventures and campaigns. Thankfully... pathfinder. So that worry has been neatly solved. Now we can all live in peace with one another and celebrate that our hobby is going well. Right...

I'll never live long enough to experience all of 4e

4e was never much of a gamble, naysayers and edition wars aside. WoTC knew their product would sell before they ever made it. This gives them a remarkable freedom to work on everything at once and invest large amounts of money knowing that they would see a good return. They probably could have...

    grappling.

Reroll, just like you normally do with a tie on a grapple check. Two natural twenties (or ones) we consider a tie no matter how good (or bad) the grapple modifier.

Good lower level spells to bother a higher level party?

Agreed. The spell affects a specific object and no longer affects it if its destroyed. Being dissolved in water seems a pretty clear cut case of destroyed. Well it'd be a bad way of going about it. The DM gets to do it once, and the PCs then do it a hundred times on every opponent they face...

    long term curses?

Well the difference is that my answer can be done with canonical D&D without introducing an extra supplement. If you really like this new system then that's great, I'm just saying you don't need it to get the end result you described. Plus I'm uncomfortable citing unspecified "malevolent...

Good lower level spells to bother a higher level party?

That idea is so awesome, if I were your DM I'd be tempted to say yes. However... the only time I can think of off the top of my head that this issue was tackled anywhere in the rulebooks was the fiend of possession which originally has the ability to possess an object and it isn't until several...

    Best use for figment spells?

Actually they do. Page PHB 173 says "A figment spell creates a false sensation", "Likewise you cannot make a visual copy of something unless you know what it looks like" and "Because Figments and glamers (see below) are unreal, they can not produce real effects the way other types of illusions...

    long term curses?

I love high magic an awful lot, but I'm still iffy about commoners casting magic that way. If you want a witchy vibe, why not have an ethereal devil telepathically communicating with the commoner offering to carry out their bidding? Every time the commoner asks the devil to commit an evil act...

    grappling.

I've been houseruling natural 20s as automatic successes on grapple checks so long that I forgot it's not an official rule. (unless you really want to stretch the phrase "Like a melee attack roll").

Opinions about Raise Dead, Resurrection, Reincarnation...

I treat these spells the same way I do fireball or magic-missile. They exist in the world and are available for PCs and NPCs to have on their spell lists. As such the world has adapted to the possibility of resurrections. Barghests are widely sought after for their ability to destroy souls...

    DM Advice For Difficult Players?

I agree with Roguerouge, listen to the argument once then make a call you can live with for the rest of the session. Then at the end of the session you can discuss it in depth. Also I would approach your other players. Find out if what he's doing is bugging them or if perhaps they appreciate...

Is it "metagaming" to remind a player their power works on a miss?

I know this isn't from 4e, but I trust basic etiquette is much the same. DMG 3.5 page 13. "No matter how well you know the rules, though, a player might remember some point that didn't occur to you. Most players, quite properly, won't lord it over you if they know some rules better than you...

When you're the only one who likes what you like

Well, I don't like it myself, but that doesn't mean it's badwrongfun for you to like it. If you love 4th edition, don't let my opinion change that at all. I hope you go on loving and enjoying it for as long as possible. I'm sad though that you're not finding anyone to share your enjoyment of it...

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

My gaming group doesn't have any female players in it at the moment, (though I am trying to recruit my friend's girlfriend into the hobby since I think she'd love it) but I've gamed with plenty of women in the past and they've never had any troubles with the game. Their reaction to the more...

What do your DM/GM Notes Look Like?

I'll watch this space with some interest as I'm trying to get myself more organized. In the past, I've run my games half on the wing and half from memory. About the only notes I'd ever take would be to draw a map showing the layout with a few one word notes to remind me what I was going to put...

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

Back when I used to run 2nd Edition AD&D I would generally start a game focused on roleplaying challenges, mystery adventures and city based sites at first and work the combat/dungeoneering aspects later on once they'd gained a few levels. Plus one of my main campaigns was in Dark Sun where...

    Fighters gaining attribute bonus?

I've been working on the classes lately, making a few minor adjustments and I'd like to give something extra to the fighter. I was considering the idea of them gaining a bonus to their attributes (str, dex and con anyway) at various levels. What do people think? What progression would you use?

Richard Baker on Orcus and Deity Slaying

That is the coolest idea I've ever heard for a planescape game.

Raise Dead: A nice big bone to the simulationists

This is a detail I include in the campaign settings I create. I think a lower rate of infant mortality and a near-modern level of health and lifespan make a game much more enjoyable than the grim reality of medieval life.
