    Reviewing the Artificer

I agree that the healing power is too much like healing word and seems a bit forced. But I disagree that healing is not essential to a leader. A party simply is not as effective without healing. Having a leader in the party should mean the party has that role covered and there should be no...

Anyone else wonder why they didn't combine the 3.5 spell system and the 4th edition..

So far I like the new spell system. I haven't seen it in action through high levels, so I reserve final judgment, but I'm glad they were willing to try a new system.

    Why can't wizards heal?

I think wizards should be able to heal, just not as well as clerics. After all, clerics have very powerful damaging area effect spells.

    PHB II in March?

I will definitely get the book. I just hope they have playtested it and thought through it as carefully as they did for PHB1. I'd hate to have each book introduce classes and options which are more powerful than characters built when only the first PHB was available.

    New Dungeon Article

I am glad to get new free adventures from WOTC, but I was a little disappointed that it wasn't for 1st or 2nd level PCs. Right now I am in desperate need of LOW level adventures. I have at least two or three sets of players that want to play 4E, and I want to run different pre-made 4E...

You know 4th edition has succeeded when...

I know it succeeded for me because the ease of DMins with the new edition for those like me, who have limited time for prep, has already allowed me to introduce four new players to D&D who had never played any roleplaying game before, and I have four others ready to try it who either have never...

D&D 4E Keep on the Shadowfell and 4e thoughts - Spoilers in this thread

I ran our first session two weeks ago. There are six players, five of whom had never played D&D before, and one who had played a little third edition, but not fourth edition. We had a blast that first session. I had the marauders attacking a farmstead near town which beloned to one of the...

Defender Newbie, Paladin vs. Fighter in marking.

I think both classes are effective at marking in most situations. Remember that the fighter's mark only lasts until the end of his next turn. Of course, he can easily mark again with another attack (marking whether he hits or misses). The paladin's divine challenge continues so long as you...

    Sneak Attack + Critical Hit?

The way I read it, you maximize everything except the dice you only roll when you get a crit (such as from high crit weapons and magic weapons). Has anyone gotten a WOTC CSR response on this question?

Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

We play our second session on Saturday! I'm very excited to see how the new players will do on their second time playing. They had a good time last time and have talked about the game several times since the first session two weeks ago. They've taken to calling Tlaloc "TClk, TClk" like the...

Homebrew Rule Question: Attack for Utility Powers

I would hesitate to allow that, at least until I've run 4e games through several entire campaigns of up to high level. Siloing attack and utility powers could be important for balance. Some of the utility powers might get overpowered if you could take more of them than the designers planned for.

KotS -- built for 5 PCs?

I am running the adventure for a 6 player party, so I have to adjust in the other direction. Next game they'll probably tackle the kobold lair. I will probably add a skirmisher to the outside, and a slinger to the inside.

    Stealth in Combat

O.k., I think I understand how to use Stealth in combat under most circumstances now. So long as you have cover or concealment at the time you make an attack, you make a Stealth check to see if you have combat advantage against your target. Other Stealth checks may be needed in or out of...

    Stealth in Combat

Leugren, I think your ruling makes sense. I think I will use that as my ruling next weekend unless we get clarification that is different from WOTC before then.

    Stealth in Combat

I ran a single encounter for a player this weekend to see if I had grasped the 4E rules well enough to run our next game this weekend. I realized I still don't understand how and when you can use Stealth in combat in even the most basic and frequent types of scenarios. The specific example...

When does Dungeon's first adventure path start?

Has there been any word on when the first DDI Dungeon adventure path is supposed to begin? I am desperate for adventures that start out at first level, especially adventures that DON'T involve kobolds (and preferably no goblins either). I like kobolds and goblins, but at this point we used...

    4e Suppliment Requests

I'd love to get my hands on a monster book or supplement book detailing many human archetypes as NPC/monsters at various levels to supplement the meager few in the Monster Manual. I'd also love to see supplements that do for the other humanoid and demihuman races the same as the recent Creature...

Help! Wizard spellbooks and encounter spells?

The way I understood it, when you get to a level where you get utility spells, you pick two utilitiy spells of that level of your choice (or three if you have the Expanded Spellbook feat). Each day, you prepare one of those two (or three) utility spells of that level. If you pick a daily...

Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

Trust Gnome One After resting at the Inn, the group set out for the dragon burial site. A few hours later, after traveling through the green hills and meadows southwest of Winterhaven, the heroes arrived at a large crater of bare rock dug into the wilderness. A friendly, giggly voice greeted...

Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

Down Time In Winterhaven The town of Winterhaven was founded over two hundred years ago, under the protection of the Emperor (before the fall of the Empire of Nerath). At one point, Nerath’s soldiers kept watch over the town from Shadow Keep, a fortress built on the nearby foothills. Shadow...
