Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

The Quest Begins On arriving in the Middle World, Xandir first turned for aid to the eladrin’s brethren, the Wood Singer elves of Westdeep Forest. Hearing of the prophesy, the elven lord of the Wood Singers determined that the time has come to find and unite Lozol and Lilith, the long sundered...

Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

Intro and A Cryptic Prophesy of Doom The World Needs Heroes The World is no longer what it once was. As little as a century ago, the mighty empire of Nerath held sway over all the known lands. Eladrin oracles were welcomed by human sages in Nerath’s centers of learning. Halfling wanderers...

Story Hour - Keep on the Shadowfell with first time D&D players

The cast of characters in the six player party: Lilith the Half-Elven - Fey-pact warlock female half-elf, daughter of elven knight Sir Keegan Redleaf and a human woman from Winterhaven. Lilith was raised by adoptive human parents in Winterhaven until her family was expelled from town after she...

    Played Keep on the Shadowfell

Today I started running Keep on the Shadowfell for a group of new players who have never played D&D before. It was a blast. They haven't met Irontooth yet. They fought the marauders and then had a blast facing Agrid. They loved to hate Agrid. He kept fading away. The last time he faded...

    Wizard and spellbooks

I agree that is the only reasonable explanation, and the way I intend to run it unless we get official errata that says otherwise. I agree the rules are ambiguous on this point, but I think it was intended to mean that when you retrain a power, for wizards it means retraining both (or all...

D&D 4E Careful Shot vs Twin Strike....No Contest (4e spoilers)

Now that you've shared your resuls with us, could you please also share your underlying math with us? The results don't actually surprise me too much, but it would be nice to have it laid out, especially for any WOTC employees that read this thread and might be in a position to errata Careful...

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

The warlord builds are transposed, at least as far as at-will powers. The at-will powers suggested for inspired warlord are intelligence based and the at-will powes suggested for tactical warlord are charisma based, when they should be the opposite.

    D&D 4E 4E Item price parity.

I think the purpose was to allow each class, with 100 gp starting money, to each start with the best normal armor they can wear. If you adjust the armor prices, you should also adjust the prices for wands, spellbooks, etc. and give all characters more starting money, so that by the end of all...

D&D 4E Why I hate the Hydra: —and other dumbed down 4E monsters—

I think one of the WOTC designers posted recently that the hydra was at one points supposed to have a cool power involving the heads regenerating or something of that sort, and they took out the power due to fear that it was too complex, but in his blog he was wishing they had left that cool...

What is the point of implements?

With an eladrin it's not hard to have a +2 or even +3 on Intelligence. A +3 on every attack roll for everyone in the area of effect of your most powerful daily attack is really nice. And you can get that bonus on your attacks once per encounter.

Rituals take too long and creative casting is dead

I prefer to have characters have to rely on the Insight skill to discern lies. I prefer to have characters actually learning languages or to occasionally not understand the stranger except by nonverbal communication, or to have to come up with a creative way to find the time for the comprehend...

    Fourth Edition is a MASTERPIECE!

O.k., now I have reviewed most of the material in the core books. And I felt compelled to come and pronounce: they are a masterpiece, a work of genius, and I am thrilled to be a D&D fan on the eve of a new age of gaming. I have been looking forward to 4E with a generally positive outlook, but...

    Human Wizard (Level 1, 11, and 21)

I agree meteor swarm looks too weak. However, as to the damage level of mid-level spells, I think we have to actually try this in practice first to see how magical implements, criticals and to a lesser extent, feats, work into the picture. Remember that with a +6 wand your critical will do...

    Warlord - I don't get it

As DM, I am very happy about the inclusion of the warlord. I was skeptical about the class at first. But now I am thrilled to have an option for a group of players where no one wants to play a cleric. I am finding it easier to find someone that wants to play a warlord, so the group can have...

Racial Feats for Gnomes, Orcs, others

I think creating racial feats for the monstrous player character races will be pretty simple. I'm sure we'll see some in official products or DDI soon. But it's just a matter of allowing a small bonus to the race's special ability or power. For example: Warrior’s Indomitability (orc feat)-...

    Human Wizard (Level 1, 11, and 21)

One thing I'm confused about with the spellbook is that it says you get two Daily or Utility powers each level where those become available. The Dailies are clear to me, but the Utilities sometimes are Daily and sometimes are Encounter. Does that mean a second level wizard can, on a given day...

I also have the books [merged] (info on upcomming Power sources and more)

If a character is proficient with a longsword, do they get +3 on their attacks with it?

I also have the books [merged] (info on upcomming Power sources and more)

Can someone please confirm the racial ability bonuses for half-elves? Both pre-gen half-elves we have seen had +2 on Charisma and +2 on Constitution, but there was speculation that at least the +2 Con was possibly a flexible bonus the half-elf could choose for any physical stat. Was that...

    Inspiring Word House Rule

I think it might be a balanced house rule, but I prefer to have warlords that are very effective at healing, so that the players don't feel they are missing out at all if no one selects to play a cleric. That is what I think is the greatest thing about the warlord class. Finally, clerics are...
