    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Mike Lays It All Out

I am curious to see how they implement the changes regarding feats. I can envision it being a good way to achieve more modularity in complexity. But the more I think about it the more I hate the new direction on skills. I really like the skill system in 3e and 4e, and for that matter was o.k...

D&D 5E (2014) What has changed since the first packet?

I hated the first packet so much I didn't even feel motivated to try playing it or running a game with it. I liked the latest packet and we playtested it today and enjoyed it a lot. If the next packet is a return towards the style of the first packet I would be very disappointed. But I'll...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L: Mike Lays It All Out

My main concern with this article was the reference to the DM having to adjust DCs if you use the skill system. What!? If I am someone who wants to use skills, I'm not going to be able to use these rules if all the DCs for checks in the rule books assume I'm not using skills, and I have to...

D&D 5E (2014) First playtest today - survey says: good so far (Blindenstone spoilers)

I'm a big Fourth Edition fan, and have been very skeptical of DNDNext. But as the playtest documents have moved forward I've been encouraged by the direction of the rules to what looks to me like possibly an interesting balance of good ideas from 2nd and 4th editions, basically a 2d edition...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lets Talk Spells

I think the main problem with spell saves is that it looks like it will be too difficult for monsters or characters to make saves, especially at mid to high levels of play. One thing that might help is to go back to three saves (Ref/Fort/Will) and granting the higher of each of two ability...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't High Level Monster ACs too low even for a flat math system?

I should be just as difficult, on average, to affect a creature with a spell that requires a save, as for the spellcaster to hit with a spell that requires a spell attack roll.

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a Hot Rod: What I miss most in D&D Next

My reading of the new Playtest rules was that people are allowed to pick their own selection of skills and feats, and are not bound to pick only the ones provided in the background and specialty choice they make. Am I mistaken? Or are you saying that there aren't enough feats yet, or that the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wildshape Good! Polymorph Bad!

"Free range" polymorph is just too multi-purposed, too vague, too broad, and too potentially unbalanced. At a 4th level spell slot, it potentially allows the caster to become better at melee than the fighter, better at stealth than the rogue, use troll regeneration to heal faster than a cleric...

    D&D 5E (2014) 4/18/2013 D&D Next Q&A

I was disappointed to see duergar and kuo-to described in recent Wondering Monster articles on the Wizards site as having various immunities such as to illusions. This seems to go counter to the design philosophy expressed above. I do think there is a place for immunities for creatures that...

    D&D 5E (2014) We need more Int/Str/Cha saving throws

It seems to me Gust of Wind should definitely have been a Strength save.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bug Reporting Thread

Page 12 of Specialties and Feats has the Sniper feat, which says you make shots with precision by sacrificing stopping power. But the rules for the feat don't present any mechanics for any "sacrificing stopping power". I'm not sure if that is meant to be just flavor text with no game effect or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bug Reporting Thread

The taks "eavesdrop on whispered conversation through door" is incorrectly placed under Sense Motive instead of Listen on page 8 of the DM Guidelines.

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't High Level Monster ACs too low even for a flat math system?

I was concerned reading through the spell list that I saw no restriction on stacking different buffs. While the original spell list could account for this by limiting the number of spells that provide bonuses of a certain type, the game designers should count on there being future supplements...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wildshape Good! Polymorph Bad!

Wow, I had missed the possible restriction to "beast" forms. If what can be considered a beast is carefully spelled out and specifically excludes magical and similar abilities that might help, but there still could be creatures with swallow hole and other extreme corner case abilities that may...

    D&D 5E (2014) We need more Int/Str/Cha saving throws

I don't understand why Gust of Wind wasn't made a Strength save. Isn't that exactly the spell that should require a Strength save?

    D&D 5E (2014) Wildshape Good! Polymorph Bad!

I was struck by the playtest rules for polymorph, especially compared to the druid's wildshape. I like the way wildshape was handled, as general forms such as hound, behemoth, etc. I was very concerned with Polymorph. One of the problems with 3rd edition and prior editions, and which caused...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't High Level Monster ACs too low even for a flat math system?

I agree this is even a greater concern, which I hadn't focused on before. I remember this was a problem with 3rd edition, that at higher levels save DCs became ridiculously high for min-maxed spell casters, and with the return of "save or die" spells in DNDNext, this could present a serious...

D&D 5E (2014) Aren't High Level Monster ACs too low even for a flat math system?

I'll accept your math Dausuul, since I was only using the numbers I saw in the Attack Bonus thread and didn't do my own calculation. But if you assume a +13 attack for high level characters, then Asmodeus at AC 17 and huge red dragon at AC 15 are still to easy to hit, in my opinion. Maybe not...
