This was actually a game balance concern of Monte's that was addressed through the tabula rasa effect. The concern being how significantly the difficulty of undead encounters differs based on whether you have a turning class in the party.

Nope, their speech is non-tonal. In any case I've done some reading on this and it appears they were trying to speak standard mandarin. Maybe your Chinese-speaking friends were impressed they could speak anything beyond "ni hao". :)

I find it hard to believe in that if the language has merged so much with standard English that they wouldn't have more of a natural command of it. It is a very cool idea, but it's jarring to the small percentage of the population who can understand Mandarin.
