Where are you buying Mordenkainen's Magnificient Emporium?

I got mine on day of release from my FLGS which is just around the corner from where I work (Black Lion Games in Edinburgh, UK). I paid £20 which is more or less RRP. For the record, I don't always use this store. Having two small boys means I have a limited budget for this kind of thing so I...

    Mordenkainens Weapon Emporium ??

For me, this is one of the selling points for the book. Sure, I like crunch a lot but small bite-sized sections of fluff for these items is really good. YMMV, as ever. Also, I see a lot of items in here that are "classic" items from previous editions (such as the Wand of Wonders, Staff of...

Tactical movement to avoid opportunity attacks

The RC also states that every square of movement in a charge action has to bring the character closer to its target ... My players stretch that a little too. Just been re-reading this thread and I have revised my attitude a bit. Thanks to Nemesis Destiny for that interesting Viking combat link...

Gardmore Abbey is pretty darn good

Just wanted to add my voice to the praise for Madness at Gardmore Abbey. This is the kind of adventure product that I have been waiting for since 4e came out. I received it a couple of days ago and haven't had chance to do much more than a cursory read-through but I am impressed with what I have...

Spirit of Healing on enemy's space

Something came up in our game last night and I can’t seem to find a clear answer anywhere. I am hoping you people can clear this up for me. The party’s cleric cast Spirit of Healing (Level 6 Utility) at the beginning of a big fight and started moving it around as per the rules. No problem...

Tactical movement to avoid opportunity attacks

The players in my game are rather too scared of making mistakes and generally over-strategise combat encounters. I have taken steps to counter that but there is one thing that still riles me and I am not sure if I can or should clamp down on it. In fact, to be honest, I’m sure I do it myself...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

I played through a short adventure about a year ago and there was one encounter that was a combat encounter but was run as a skill challenge. And for no real reason other than the point of it was to escape massing hostiles, rather than slaughter them all. Successes were awarded for successful...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

Thanks for this. I do remember 1e, yes; we have played every edition of D&D but the Chainmail rules! Interesting article. I particularly like the 'end-of-encounter riders' idea and will probably adopt something along those lines for my own game.

I am *so* stupid! 'Heathen' is Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now!

It's got the river journey and everything. No decapitated water buffalo sacrifice though, unless I missed that somewhere. That's right about the mechanics, Siberys. I updated all the NPCs according to the new monster maths and it seems to be working.

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

We used to use Fantasy Grounds 2. That was excellent and everything and they have made *huge* strides forward over the past year or so (since the parent company SmiteWorks was taken over). It dealt with all that too - targeting, application of effects, modifiers, dice rolling and so on. But it...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

This was a concern and I will be watching things to see how they go. Like I said in the thread title though, this works for our group. By that, I mean that our group is not into optimisation very much (if at all) and none of them is likely to always choose the big damage option over control...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

I did try running Veggiesama's framework for a bit and while it *is* very good at what it does, we are left with your second point. There are numerous possibilities, options, buttons, character properties and so on that we found that it slowed us down. I even pared it down a bit but that wasn't...

I am *so* stupid! 'Heathen' is Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now!

I must have read this adventure (Dungeon 156, I think; one of the earliest issues anyway) three times through at least but it was only while reviewing parts of it the other day, in preparation for our next session, that I realised that the story is essentially Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

I do similar but make them delay instead. Come to think of it though, I prefer your solution. It makes more sense in a "real" combat situation - "What shall I do? What shall I do?" while defending yourself. I *never* used to group monsters by initiative. Never. It just went against the grain...

Combat speed - works for our group; one-hour encounters

Having been back playing 4e for a while now, following about 15 months off, our group (and me in particular, as DM) was getting fed up with the extended combat encounters. We found that we were seemingly unable to finish a single combat encounter in less then three hours, which was clearly too...

    Weapon proficiency

Nope. Phased plasma crossbow in the 40-watt range. ;)

    Weapon proficiency

I do have this right, don't I? In 4e, you can use weapons that you are not proficient in but you will not gain that weapon's proficiency bonus. Only, I don't appear to be able to equip a rogue with a crossbow in the DDi CB. Any thoughts?

D&D 4E Tomb of Horrors (4E version) - anyone run this yet?

I had considered doing that myself. It would mean buying the Shadowfell box though, of course. You reckon it's worth it then? It's working nicely?

Legends and Lore: Head of the Class

What I get from this article (and all those leading up to it, in retrospect) is a justification for Essentials and a sense that if Mearls had had his way (or if they had thought of it sooner), they would have done Essentials first (perhaps a more rigorous version) and then expanded on that. I...

    Updated Version of C1

I am sure it could be a decent revenue stream for them. Sure, it takes the shine off the "rewards" aspect and they would have to review using the word "exclusive" and probably delay public release, but even so I reckon there's a good market for it.
