Melee characters and Primary Attack Stats

MAD = Multiple Attribute Dependency. All 4E classes have it a little, but due to the design of their power selection and attack attributes, clerics and paladins have it in unhealthy doses. (BTW, this one, and NAD's for Non AC Defenses makes me suspect D&D players like their acronyms punny)

Melee characters and Primary Attack Stats

As I have seen it, it's a shift in design philosophy. Instead of having a class with two main attributes, and one secondary like the Cleric (Strength & Wisdom main, Charisma secondary) and the Paladin (Strength & Charisma Main, Wisdom secondary), classes in the PHB2 seem to be designed around...

    Weapon Focus & Implements

This was how things went at first. However, since some characters use weapons as implements, and have implement powers that use weapon dice (the Swordmage was the first of the bunch), things could get really confusing really fast. You get the damage bonus on weapon damage rolls, but does that...

Question about Dragonkin Defender's "None Shall Pass" ability

Bah. Of course you can visualize it. As long as you make it very clear to your players that what you're telilng them in fluff terms is unrelated to what you're saying in rules terms (it's called "poetic license"), tell them whatever you want. In combat more than anywhere else, it's the rules...

    How do I throw people?

Actually, a Troll or Giant picking someone up and throwing them is a PERFECT example for a power, and one that I might well work into one of them in my coming sessions. To see a good example of how this sort of thing can get worked into a power, see the Bugbear Strangler for details. Also, for...

    Leader Suggestion

Precisely. Either talk things over with your party, and tell them that this way, the game is simply no fun for you (you should not be the only one to make sacrifices), or just play what you like to play like everyone else does, and see how that works out. Party balance is important, yes, but it...

    Leader Suggestion

Dude, the Paladin is a defender, not a leader. Of course he doesn't grant bonuses or extra attacks like Warlocks and Clerics do - yes, he 'splashes' into leader a bit, cause he can use several powers that heal allies and transfer some of his own surges to other party members with Lay on Hands...

    Raising the wounded

No, that's a clear houserule. A failed heal check just means he isn't stabilized. (As an aside: I really hate critical fumble houserules of any kind).

    Ranged Half Elf Brutal Scoundrel

I think the idea is to use a feat from the PHB2, which supposedly improves the Half-Elf racial ability somehow, most likely by letting you use the chosen At-Will power from the other class At-Will. And yes, Twin Strike and Righteous Brand seem like the most obivous candidates to me.

    Wearing armor and resting

I'm not sure (I don't remember any statement on the matter), but I'm guessing the rule was purposely removed. Using encounters that catch armor users with their pants down (almost literally), only punishes those that need armor to keep their AC up. What's more, those are most often the classes...

Clarification needed - Light Step feat

I don't see why not. Yeah, you cay "light step" means it's on foot, and "allies" means they can only do that when the group totals up to five including horses. But they spent a feat on something that's really almost mostly flavour. It's cool, it allows them to play expert tracker/ranger, and...

    Is "Shield" too powerful?

I know you're joking here, but I seriously had a DM once in 3.5 who did this. He kept track of our HP, and the only way my druid could determine how wounded anyone was was to make a Heal Check DC 15 (trivial, but he had it cost me a move action), and then he'd give me a general idea ("just...

    Channel Divinity

I'm actually quite happy with Raven Queen's Blessing myself. My Cleric is loaded up on healing power, and this is an extra surge I can trigger in a battle. True, it requires me to kill something, but the occasional killing blow or minion presence (he was once kind enough to provide 20 skeleton...

A couple abilities in Martial Power seem WAY too good...

Rather than go for 'hit', I'd go with "Whenever the BRV Fighter uses an attack power, he gains THP equal to his CON modifier.". That way, it's once per turn (unless you're using immediate attack powers), doesn't depend on him hitting or missing, and if you use and hit with an Invigorating power...

    Weapon focus + holy avenger

I don't see the harm in that ruling from Wizards. It doesn't stack with the elemental feats, and it puts at least weapon-using spellcasters on par with weapon users. If anything, I'm pondering allowing an "Implement Focus" feat instead, with the same effects as the weapon feats, to do just that.

    "Student of Battle" Feat Question

Check the Errata/Updates, for this one, at Official D&D Updates For the ranger multi-class specifically: So once, per encounter, and it lasts until the end of your next turn. Note that multi-class feats remain very strong even with once/day or once/encounter attached, since quite a few of...

    Favourite Warlock Pact

I still have to try out a Warlock myself. Flavourwise, the Infernal pact seems to me the most interesting, especially since it allows many interpretations, and it's the 'classic' Faustian warlock feel. Say what now? The Infernal pact is, as stated in the book, based on channeling stolen power...

    Feats for other races?

Heh. Most likely. This is D&D after all... I expect almost all suggested 'monster' races will get a PC write-up. In fact, Shadar-Kai already had their write-up in a recent Dragon article. Shifters are an Eberron race, IIRC, so I reckon they'll get fully detailed in the Eberron PH.

    D&D 4E 4e Constitution - what a waste of time !

Seriously, if you're going into your second encounter with all your surges spent, either your DM is giving you such hard encounters that you're not supposed to take on more than one from per day (thus screwing up the HS math), or your team tactics are such that you spend all your surges in one...

    Confused about holy symbols

The only holy symbol I can think of wielding, personally, is a Holy Avenger. Note, however that the cleric has powers that use both a weapon and a holy symbol, and that having to switch between the two all the time would be a rather painful procedure. Other implement classes like Wizards and...
