D&D Essentials Live in Character Builder!

Eh. This was announced a while ago, and while it is disappointing, having all the stuff in the compendium will do for the time being. I just hope they give an ETA on the CB update soon. The lead programmer has been posting on the WotC forums saying he's got news ready, but that he's waiting for...

Ranger (Hunter) is a Martial and Primal Controller

Hrm. Are you speaking here from a conceptual, or a mechanical point of view? Although, admittedly, I have problems seeing it either way. From a concept point of view, the cleric is a servant of the gods who protects and heals his party members with divine magic, and uses that same magic to...

    Revisiting the Weapliment Expertise Nerf

I believe you. I reckon it's a bug from the Character Builder that was removed since you last looked at your swordmage. :)

    Revisiting the Weapliment Expertise Nerf

Nope, that should do the trick. I don't have the PHB on hand, but at least for the Weapon Expertise feats, I don't think there was an update. The compendium at least doesn't list any. If that's correct, then Weapon Expertise never worked for the swordmage, at least by RAW.

Are stance utilities less desirable for essentials fighters

Oh please. To make poor choices for the Essentials martial characters, meaning you choose utility powers or feats that don't work well for them, you have to go outside of HotFL and actually pick Fighter powers/feats from previous books - and you THEN need to actually pick a bad power/feat. If...

Magic Item Daily Power rule change and Elixir

I'm not too sure about item rarity myself, but what's to stop you from saying "In my game, you can create uncommon items"? Hell, I know DM fiat is something to be regarded with caution when it comes to rules, but how about "In my game, you can create uncommon items if I allow it"? Nothing stops...

Ranger (Hunter) is a Martial and Primal Controller

One could argue that those existed primarily for the need for synergy in the first place - although, in this case, I think it was more for the wish for more specific rules subsystems. A big part of the attraction of more classes, after all, is different ways to play the game. Interestingly, I...

Are stance utilities less desirable for essentials fighters

This. Just like 'Shielded Sides' is no good for a character without a shield, so are utility stances that aren't exceptionally powerful no good for the Slayer or Knight. The new players that Essentials is targeting won't run into this problem, given that you only have access to these options if...

    DDI September/October Update info

Err... the guy above you is just speculating. Hell, all of this is pure speculation, and unless WotC is dead-set on pissing of its customer base, it's all pretty unlikely speculation. I know this is the internet, and people demand the right to cry foul and have a good bout of nerdrage, or...

    Essentials: An end to MADness?

Yeah, no. Random stat generation does not solve the MAD problem. Some classes are MAD because they not only require good scores in several abilities to begin with, they also need to boost too many different stats at every opportunity. Add to that that randomly rolling for stats is inherently...

    Hat's off to WotC for...

Mearls has all but said this would be the case, here on EnWorld somewhere, back when Essentials was being revealed. I don't remember exactly what he said, but when asked what the whole "Essentials will be used moving forward" thing meant, he said they'd still do old style At-will/Encounter/Daily...

    Waraxe vs Bastard Sword

Because, while dwarf two-weapon rangers using Waraxes are AWESOME, what Dracosuave is saying that the most straightforward (and boring) way to make a ranger effective at all levels is to use a Str/Dex ranger using heavy blades. That is not to say there's no other effective way to do things -...

    DDI September/October Update info

See, while I understand your reaction should it actually come to pass, I simply cannot see how you (or anybody else with this reaction) can get from "new web-based tools system" to "Oh noes, they're gonna replace the CB with online-only tools!!!!". There is literally nothing in the...

4th ed artificer... like it or hate it?

I love the mechanics, which give it a very unique feel compared to the other leaders. Healing Infusion as a healing mechanic is very different from any other healing mechanic out there. It would be nice to see them gain a larger power selection, though. There are more than a few levels which...

D&D 4E So, what do you see yourself as in 4e?

Given 4 roles, in order of importance, I think I'm an Actor, Thinker, Instigator, and Powergamer. For me roleplaying is all about the character, the starting point of every player, so I try to get into my character's head and try to approach every situation as they would. For types of...

How do you beef up AC to Eladrin Wizard?

Sorry, what? Unarmored Agility doesn't add anything extra compared to leather armor proficiency in terms of AC, the only difference lies in which masterwork and magic enhancements you have available. Hafted defense is a bit more iffy, but it essentially gives staff/polearm users the benefits of...

Anyone else tired of game mechanic freebies?

Very much this. Used to be campaigns started at level 3 because level 1 characters are so fragile. These days, I still prefer to start at level 3, because an extra encounter power and a utility power make a world of difference in making a character more diverse. Adding an extra encounter power...

    Fight's Combat Challenge

I wouldn't compare the two, to be honest. While the reasons for the sneak attack upgrade are not entirely clear to me (beyond "It's cool"), the fighter hardly needs an upgrade, and a well-played + built fighter probably still outperforms a well-played + built knight, because the regular fighter...

Need a 'ranged' weapon for my Warden.

As said before, it's a decent backup in the case of flying enemies or when you can't get to melee range. But 99% percent of the time, move + charge should be able to get you into melee every time, and that's where a warden ought to be in the first place.

    Fight's Combat Challenge

That is correct. Combat Challenge is an Immediate Interrupt, and you only get one Immediate Action per round. Mind you, Combat Challenge only goes off if the target shifts or attacks someone else. Moving away at full speed triggers an opportunity attack, which you CAN use once per turn, and...
