Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, & Scorpion Bombs

Well, a scorpion bomb is pretty much what you'd expect -- stuff a bunch of scorpions in a sealed pot and chuck it at people you don't like. There's not a whole lot about the ingredients in Greek Fire, since the recipe's lost and there's already endless speculation as to the composition. The...

    I have the Draconomicon!

Perhaps dragons, being so infatuated with their own personal power and magnificence, just aren't very religious. Hee.

Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, & Scorpion Bombs

After posting a bit in that thread about giant bee honey, I got to wondering -- has anyone else read this book: Greek Fire, Poison Arrows, & Scorpion Bombs: Biological and Chemical Weapons in the Ancient World by Adrienne Mayor? After reading it, I was thinking that it was a rather spiffy...

How much honey? (Ahhh, Halfling Chefs!)

Alas! Beaten to the punch. Hand of Evil is quite right -- honey made primarily from the nectar of certain rhododedron flowers can cause a fairly interesting level of intoxication, which can not only introduce hallucinations, but also "dizziness, weakness, excessive perspiration, nausea, and...

"Quality Standards" in the d20 System Guide

Yes, exactly (and as that customer service email was signed "Darrin", I'll betchum it's from Oathbound's own Darrin Drader) -- he's just saying what the lawyers told him to say. In that case, if the lawyers are being truthtelling sorts, then this standards of decency bit predates the BoEF...

"Quality Standards" in the d20 System Guide

When was the Book of Erotic Fantasy announced, anyhow? Andy Smith did mention this tidbit on the WotC boards: Has it really been a full year since the BoEF was announced? I wouldn't have thought so. Likewise, if it hasn't been a year yet for that, then it wouldn't have been a year yet since...

[Green Ronin] Announcing the Book of Fiends

The Abraxas section refers frequently to Valentinian gnostic cosmography, but other than that I could detect no overt religious references. That said, many of the ideals of Valentinus' followers do have definite similarities to Buddhist thought and goals (escape of the trap of existence, etc)...

[Dungeon] Which TSR Modules are "Classics"?

I was always very fond of UK1 & 2 (or was it 2 and 3?), the Sentinel and the Gauntlet. Ran those many a time.

    Moms who banned DnD

My parents weren't ever concerned that the game was evil, as far as I know. I never saw any of that stuff until I was much older, the hype and all. However, one of my friends came to my confirmation (I'm Catholic) and afterwards when we were all hanging out in the church and hobnobbing with...

Bonus XP for writing up a story hour?

I tried this as well. I think I was giving 100 xp per character level for each journal, but only two players did it, and neither of them kept it up for very long -- it was too much work. Also, one player wouldn't participate unless he could get more XP than the others for writing a better journal.

Religion for all the other characters

Unfortunately not. Unless playing a specifically religious character, my players have no use for religion. Even the cleric players don't like it, really.

    Modern Bard Songs

There's a wacky crazy group of Finnish string musicians called Apocalyptica who do Metallica songs with a string quartet. Just instrumental, of course. They're really good, and it's quite amusing. Those wacky Finns, I tellya.

[OT] Aside from dogs and cats, what pets do you own?

I've got six hermit crabs. Fine animals, they're not very messy, are usually quiet, and don't smell like anything. Quite entertaining to watch them toodle around and change shells and all that as well.

[OT] Counting cards. What is it?

I myself can't count cards at all. However, I did know a guy in grad school who was paying for his room and board at school by blackjack winnings, and he was still there, so it seems it can be done well, hah. Essentially, it's a method of tracking cards by assigning them some sort of modifier...

    Anyone from Burlington, VT, here?

Hello Eric, Well, I live in Winooski which isn't Burlington, but that's okay. The only real game store is Quarterstaff Games, which is located on Church Street toward the bottom. It's a couple of doors up from Smokejacks Restaurant above Earth Prime Comics, so it's upstairs. Same side of the...

[Rant] I burned out last night...

Wow, Flexor, I'm in a pretty similar situation with very similar players, more or less. I've been burned out for a while now but I've kept running things to try and get to a spot where the game could be put on hold without having to remember anything very complicated if we resume, specifically...

    Where's PirateCat ?

I heard he was in jail in San Salvador, actually. Something to do with lemon trees, I didn't get many details.

DM: Do you allow Mongoose Publishing Books into your game?

Well, I've used some stuff as a DM, for NPCs and the like, and one player used a prestige class once that I told him about that, but other than that, no. I haven't got many Mongoose products, the ones I've got seem okay. Somewhat jumpy in quality, but so far nothing terrible.

[FR] who or what are the "korred?"

As I recall, korred are a dwarf relative or subrace characterized by: o wild, unkempt hair o goat's hooves / goatish lower body o love for wild dancing I believe they're chaotic neutral, and always struck me as basically dwarfy satyrs (with less-to-no emphasis on sexual voracity)...

    Burnt out GMs

I'm in the same boat, more or less. Of my five players, two rarely attend, but play often enough I guess.. one acts as if the sky is falling if we aren't able to play on a particular week, one acts as if the sky is falling if he thinks someone glanced at him funny, or if, say, his 11th level...
